Berg Insight estimates that the global installed base of active off-highway vehicle telematics systems reached 7.9 million units in 2022.

This includes connected units deployed on various off-highway vehicles across the construction, mining, agriculture and forestry sectors. The construction sector accounts for the largest share, driven by OEM telematics systems offered by heavy equipment manufacturers. Agriculture and mining moreover each account for a similar number of connected units deployed on machines and vehicles used in agricultural and mining operations respectively. The remainder is represented by the forestry sector including telematics systems fitted to various forestry equipment. Growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.1 percent, the active installed base of off-highway vehicle telematics systems across all sectors is forecasted to reach 14.6 million units worldwide in 2027.

“The top-10 equipment manufacturers offering telematics together account for around 70 percent of the total number of off-highway vehicle telematics systems in use across the construction, mining, agriculture and forestry sectors globally”, said Rickard Andersson, Principal Analyst, Berg Insight. Berg Insight ranks Caterpillar as the leading off-highway vehicle telematics provider.

“Far from surprising, the leading equipment manufacturer by market share is also by far the top player when it comes to the number of off-highway vehicle telematics subscribers”, said Mr. Andersson.

He adds that this is a natural development in an industry where telematics has increasingly been included as standard with the machine purchase, gradually covering more models and equipment categories.

“Caterpillar was the first to surpass the milestone of 1 million connected assets across all segments and the company now has more than 1.4 million units”, said Mr. Andersson.

The runners-up are SANY and Komatsu. Other major manufacturers with estimated installed bases of more than 100,000 units include Volvo Construction Equipment, Deere & Company, XCMG, Hitachi Construction Machinery, JCB, HD Hyundai and Doosan Bobcat.

“Additional players having estimated installed bases of off-highway vehicle telematics units in the tens of thousands include CNH Industrial, Liebherr, Terex, JLG Industries, AGCO, CLAAS Group and Tadano”, concluded Mr. Andersson.

Berg Insight, the world’s leading IoT market research provider, today released new findings about the vehicle telematics hardware market.

More than 47.2 million aftermarket telematics devices were sold worldwide during 2022, corresponding to a market value of € 2.4 billion. The performance of the market was still affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and the following supply chain crisis, but the market has shown recovering signs in 2023. Until 2027, annual shipments of aftermarket telematics devices are forecasted to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.5 percent to reach 77.6 million at the end of the forecast period.

Berg Insight estimates at the same time that global shipments of OEM telematics hardware for passenger cars, light trucks and commercial vehicles reached close to 58.4 million units in 2022 corresponding to a market value of € 8.4 billion.

A combination of commercial and regulatory drivers now encourages a broader set of carmakers to expand availability of connected car services across geographies and market segments.

There are also numerous OEM telematics offerings from commercial vehicle manufacturers. The attach rate of embedded telematics devices among passenger cars, light trucks and commercial vehicles is forecasted to increase from about 72 percent in 2022 to 93 percent in 2027.

Martin Cederqvist, IoT Analyst at Berg Insight, said:

“Berg Insight ranks Teltonika as the market leader in the aftermarket telematics hardware segment reaching telematics hardware sales of € 139 million.”

Other vendors that hold significant market shares are CalAmp, Queclink, Jimi (Concox) and ERM Advanced Telematics. These five vendors generated together approximately € 483 million in annual revenues from the sales of aftermarket telematics devices. CalAmp has transformed from a pure hardware provider to an end-to-end solution telematics provider. The company is however still a major supplier of hardware telematics and shipped 1.5 million units during 2022, corresponding to sales of € 105 million.

“Other significant aftermarket telematics hardware vendors include Sensata Insights, Positioning Universal and Danlaw from North America; Suntech International, Gosuncn RichLink, Neoway Technology, Gosafe, Kingwo, ATrack and iTriangle from Asia-Pacific; and the European vendors Meta System, Ruptela and Munic”, continued Mr. Cederqvist.

The design and development of OEM telematics systems is complex as these have to integrate with vehicle systems, fulfil strict quality standards and ensure performance during the long lifecycle of a vehicle model. The suppliers of OEM telematics equipment are generally established automotive suppliers that develop their solutions in cooperation with car manufacturers.

“Shipments of OEM telematics hardware for passenger cars and light trucks amounted to about 50.3 million in 2022, representing more than 86 percent of the total OEM telematics hardware shipments.”, said Mr. Cederqvist.

The leading OEM telematics hardware vendors in terms of unit shipments are therefore found in the passenger car and light truck segment. Berg Insight has in a new market research project found that the global installed base of active construction equipment (CE) OEM telematics systems reached 5.2 million units in 2021.

Growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.0 percent, the active installed base is forecasted to reach 9.6 million units worldwide in 2026. This includes all CE telematics systems marketed by construction equipment OEMs, either developed in-house or provided by the CE manufacturers in partnership with third-party telematics players.

The European market accounted for around 0.8 million active construction equipment OEM telematics systems at the end of 2021. The North American market is estimated to be somewhat larger than the European. The Rest of World moreover represents more than half of the global installed base of CE telematics systems provided by construction equipment OEMs.

Most major construction equipment OEMs have introduced telematics offerings for their customers either independently or in collaboration with telematics partners.

Rickard Andersson, Principal Analyst, Berg Insight, said:

“OEM telematics systems are today commonly factory-installed as standard at least for heavier machines and increasingly also for compact equipment.”

Other major players with several hundred thousand active CE telematics units include SANY in China, Sweden-based Volvo Construction Equipment, JCB headquartered in the UK and Japan-based Hitachi Construction Machinery. Deere & Company, Hyundai Heavy Industries and Doosan Bobcat are also estimated to have reached the milestone of 100,000 units.

“Additional players having installed bases of construction equipment telematics units in the tens of thousands include Liebherr, Terex, JLG Industries, CNH Industrial and Tadano”, concluded Mr. Andersson.

A Geotab GO device has also been fitted to Britain’s new polar research ship, the RRS Sir David Attenborough, and is being used to plan, track and manage the progress of all of the ship’s polar research expeditions. Often located thousands of miles away from the main research stations, the team is reliant on efficient communications to ensure safety and to promote the most sustainable use of fleet machinery during their research. On one of the most pristine, untouched continents on the planet, Antarctic research is instrumental in discovering the primary causes and effects of climate change.

In the past, BAS scientists and support teams relied on a high frequency (HF) radio in emergencies. Every time teams stopped, they would have to erect a rig to maintain communication with research stations, a complex task when faced with sub-zero temperatures, rough terrain, and unpredictable weather conditions.

Now, the BAS team is working with Geotab to provide a tailored solution to address their unique challenges and leverage the power of deriving powerful vehicle information data. The Geotab solution, with a modified GO9 telematics plug-in device, will be housed in a custom-built mounting box, ruggedized to protect it from extreme temperatures and conditions. Used in millions of vehicles every day, it includes a variety of real-time telematics functions such as monitoring and diagnostics, operator management, fuel management, staff health and safety management, and dynamic vehicle scheduling for the entire expedition.

The work of the BAS team helps governments and businesses set policies that shape their environmental commitments for the future of our planet, and forms the essential groundwork for the science behind climate conference discussions, such as the recently held COP26 in Glasgow.

With five research stations across the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic and research teams that frequently travel on deep-field expeditions for weeks at a time, it presents enormous connectivity challenges in areas that are ‘off grid’ – without any cell infrastructure and hundreds, if not thousands of miles away from the nearest sign of civilization.

The installed base of off-highway vehicle telematics systems will reach 10.7 million units worldwide by 2025

Berg Insight estimates that the global installed base of active off-highway vehicle telematics systems reached 5.2 million units in 2020.

This includes connected units deployed on various off-highway vehicles across the construction, mining, agriculture and forestry sectors.

The construction sector accounts for the largest share, driven by OEM telematics systems offered by heavy equipment manufacturers. Agriculture and mining each account for a similar number of connected units deployed on machines and vehicles used in agricultural and mining operations respectively. The remainder is represented by the forestry sector including telematics systems fitted to various forestry equipment.

Growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15.4 percent, the active installed base of off-highway vehicle telematics systems across all sectors is forecasted to reach 10.7 million units worldwide in 2025.

Rickard Andersson, Principal Analyst, Berg Insight, said:

“The top-10 equipment manufacturers offering telematics together account for more than 70 percent of the total number of off-highway vehicle telematics systems in use across the construction, mining, agriculture and forestry sectors globally.”

Berg Insight ranks Caterpillar and Komatsu as the leading off-highway vehicle telematics providers.

“Far from surprising, the leading equipment manufacturers by market share are also by far the top players when it comes to the number of off-highway vehicle telematics subscribers”, said Mr. Andersson.

He adds that this is a natural development in an industry where telematics has increasingly been included as standard with the machine purchase, gradually covering more models and equipment categories.

“Caterpillar was the first to surpass the milestone of 1 million connected assets”, continued Mr. Andersson.

Other major manufacturers with installed bases of more than 100,000 units include SANY, Volvo Construction Equipment, Hitachi Construction Machinery, Deere & Company and JCB.

“Additional players having estimated installed bases of off-highway vehicle telematics units in the tens of thousands include Bobcat, Doosan Infracore, Liebherr, Terex, CNH Industrial, CLAAS Group, Hyundai Construction Equipment, AGCO, JLG Industries and Tadano”, concluded Mr. Andersson.

The installed base of construction equipment OEM telematics systems will reach 8.3 million units worldwide by 2025

Berg Insight, the leading IoT market research provider, has in a new market research project found that the global installed base of active construction equipment (CE) OEM telematics systems reached almost 4.1 million units in 2020.

Growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15.3 percent, the active installed base is forecasted to reach 8.3 million units worldwide in 2025. This includes all CE telematics systems sold by construction equipment OEMs, either developed in-house or provided by the CE manufacturers in partnership with third-party telematics players. The European market accounted for around 0.7 million active construction equipment OEM telematics systems at the end of 2020. The North American market is somewhat larger than the European. The Rest of World moreover represents more than half of the global installed base of CE telematics systems provided by construction equipment OEMs.

Most major construction equipment OEMs have introduced telematics offerings for their customers. OEM telematics systems are today commonly factory-installed as standard at least for heavier machines. Berg Insight ranks Caterpillar and Komatsu as the leading construction equipment OEMs in terms of the number of CE telematics systems deployed worldwide.

Rickard Andersson, Principal Analyst, Berg Insight, said:

“Caterpillar was the first to surpass the milestone of 1 million connected assets.”

He adds that Caterpillar and Komatsu are also by far the leading construction equipment manufacturers in terms of market share.

“The remaining top-5 construction equipment OEM telematics players are SANY, Volvo Construction Equipment and JCB”, continued Mr. Andersson. Hitachi Construction Machinery and Deere & Company also have installed bases in the hundreds of thousands.

Other notable OEMs offering CE telematics solutions include Bobcat (Doosan), Doosan Infracore (Hyundai), Liebherr, Terex, Hyundai Construction Equipment, CNH Industrial, JLG Industries and Tadano.

“All of these players have installed bases in the tens of thousands of telematics units deployed on various types of construction equipment, either independently or in collaboration with telematics partners”, concluded Mr. Andersson.

The Chinese market is expected to lead the development of V2X

According to a new research report from the IoT analyst firm Berg Insight, there were about 0.7 million cars with V2X capabilities on the roads at the end of 2020.

This number is expected to grow to 35.1 million by 2025. Communications between vehicles has been discussed for more than two decades, but with few implementations. One of the main challenges using V2X communications is the lack of industry spanning standards. Two key sets of V2X direct communications exist: 802.11p-based technologies such as dedicated short-range communications (DSRC) and Cellular V2X (C-V2X). The first V2X use cases deployed globally are related to traffic efficiency and basic safety. These include for example local hazard warnings and traffic information as well as emergency electronic brake light warnings and left turn assist.

“V2X implementation is starting to gain momentum in key regions after many years of development”, said Martin Svegander, Senior Analyst at Berg Insight. DSRC-based V2X has been deployed in Europe and Japan, backed by Volkswagen and Toyota. C-V2X is gaining momentum in other regions and is backed by Ford, BMW, Audi and the telecommunications industry. The market is heavily dependent on regulatory mandates and spectrum allocation.

Mr. Svegander continued:

“Policymakers in China favour C-V2X, whereas the US and the EU have been in a regulatory uncertainty.”

In 2020, the FCC reassigned a portion (30 MHz) of the 5.9 GHz band used for ITS to C-V2X. Berg Insight believes that C-V2X will account for about 78 percent of all V2X enabled vehicles in 2025, mainly represented by China. About 50 percent of all new cars sold in China will feature C-V2X as standard in 2025. “Examples of automotive OEMs that have launched C-V2X in China include BYD, GAC, FAW, GM/SAIC, Ford, BAIC BJEV, Weltmeister, Great Wall, Human Horizons and NIO”, concluded Mr. Svegander.

The Brexit situation, with Great Britain withdrawing from the European Union, is a perfect example of the kind of chaos a broken supply chain can create.

Issues such as Brexit may have highlighted how important the trucking industry is, yet geo-political issues such as this are far from the only challenges currently facing freight and haulage, with market demands shifting quickly, and shipments growing accordingly. These issues have put trucking front and center in the eyes of those seeking industry disruption, and seismic changes to the way trucking works. As with so many transformations to the industrial landscape underway, it’s the Internet of Things (IoT), AI, and robotics leading the way and providing truly remarkable solutions to ever-growing problems.

A New Renaissance for the Trucking Industry?

Artificial intelligence, advanced robotics, and the Internet of Things are proving indispensable to the advancement of the trucking industry in the 21st century. While automated cars have dominated headlines in recent years, most analysts – quite reasonably – believe that it will be freight trucks which will be the first fully-automated vehicles in regular use on the roads. Once an AI-driven long-haul industry is in place, it’s not difficult to imagine the rest of the automotive industry catching up.

Reactions to such projections are mixed. While up to 65% of transport executives hail automation and IoT-driven trucking as nothing short of a renaissance for the industry, there are legitimate concerns that overshadow the excitement. First, there is a real risk of job losses – a common fear whenever AI is mentioned. Furthermore, there are legitimate security concerns regarding the onboard cybernetworks of autonomous trucks being hacked by cybercriminals, something which has been mitigated by innovations in the realm of anonymity networks, which can be adapted to autonomous vehicles.

Let’s take a closer look at five ways on which IoT and AI technology is transforming the trucking industry and consider the benefits to the business of just-in-time trucking and logistics.

1. Self-Driving Trucks are Safer

Perhaps the most convincing of all the arguments in support of the (seemingly unstoppable) rise of automated vehicles, both trucks and private cars, is the fact autonomous vehicles and AI-driven trucks are safer for everyone. Long-distance routes that demand long hours of high-intensity focus and alertness are dangerous for both the truck driver and those they encounter on the road. Reliable and accurate AI systems help reduce the risk of accidents, while alleviating pressures on drivers.

The trucking industry is in the midst of a personnel shortage. It’s a hard job. Fewer people are attracted to it, while the demand for haulage continues to increase. More autonomous trucks wouldn’t merely increase staff safety, they’d also help resolve capacity issues. Currently, autonomous trucks still require human drivers in the cockpit. However, as the robot systems become more skilled on their routes, a future of completely driverless fleets of trucks is easily foreseeable.

2. Staying on Top of Your Fleet

The trucking industry’s key expenses are obvious ones, such as fuel, insurance, and drivers’ wages. By tracking the locations, driving habits, and speed of the trucks in a fleet, expenses can be more successfully and efficiently managed. A combination of Big Data, AI, and IoT devices makes this happen more easily and accurately than ever before and requires little more effort than each driver having an ELD (electronic logging device) as part of their smartphone setup.

3. Fewer Repairs, Better Bottom Lines

IoT technology already plays a key role when it comes to overseeing the performance of factory equipment in the manufacturing industry, highlighting when parts need replacing, and keeping an eye on the smooth running of key components. There’s no reason why the same IoT data and technology shouldn’t be applied to the trucking industry by utilizing sensors that detect issues before they arise or recognize when vehicles need servicing.

This is a particularly attractive notion for trucking business owners and investors. Most trucking companies run up mountainous annual repair bills, as high as $15,000 per vehicle, plus another $4,000 for tires. Many of the issues that arise could have been spotted earlier. Cast in this light, smart trucks would save an immense amount of money while creating safer, more efficient fleets at the same time.

This aspect of AI, called predictive maintenance, allows problems to be addressed before they become severe (and more expensive), generating both peace of mind and a better ROI in the process. It’s no wonder that almost 90% of trucking business owners firmly believe that IoT technology is fundamental to their future success.

4. Keeping Shipments in Good Condition

Sensitive cargo, such as plants and flowers or time-sensitive perishable goods, have long been a source of headaches for the entire industry. IoT technology can automatically adjust variables like temperature and humidity in order to ensure optimal conditions for such cargo. Furthermore, it can help drivers select the best routes, taking into account road conditions, construction zones, and accidents to a timely and well-preserved delivery, both of which are critical for consistently happy customers.

In the home package delivery industry (UPS and FedEx), we’ve already seen how the ability to track packages leads to increased customer satisfaction. AI and IoT advancements allow this same functionality to be applied to commercial trucking. This industry, as much as any, can use all the trust it can find in order to future proof it for decades to come.

5. Greater Efficiency in Loading and Unloading Cargo

Last-mile deliveries and just-in-time services are on the increase, which means that every second makes a difference in logistic success rates. Robots working alongside personnel in warehouses, or working independently and fully-automated, have already made significant improvements in efficiency and time-saving procedures.

Speedier loading and unloading times allow trucks to complete more orders in a day. We’re already seeing the latest robotics technologies implemented in warehouses run by companies such as FedEx, with impressive results. Automation in the warehouse is another way to mitigate issues caused by worker shortages, and another key investment area which could save the industry millions.

IoT in the Trucking Industry: Endless Potential

There’s no questioning the fact that robotics, IoT, and AI have and will continue to cause disruption in the trucking industry, helping business owners save time and money, while staying on top of a rapidly changing and often unpredictable sector. Data-driven and tech-centric developments have been the catalysts for the digital transformation currently underway within trucking. From all indications, it appears as though the industry will act as a bellwether for the future of automated vehicles and logistics in general.

While many of the technological advances predicted for the trucking industry remain in the earliest stages, it’s clear that the business of trucking has responded positively, and is quick to adopt the latest IoT developments. With the potential to become a bonafide high-tech sector, the trucking industry plans to keep breaking new technological ground.

According to Berg Insight, the number of telematics service subscribers using embedded systems will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 27.1 percent from 80.4 million subscribers at the end of 2018 to 339.3 million subscribers at the end of 2024.

Moreover, Berg Insight forecasts that shipments of embedded car OEM telematics systems worldwide will grow from 34.0 million units in 2018 to reach 75.4 million units in 2024, which represents an attach rate of 82.0 percent.

Connected car services have evolved from being a differentiating factor to a common feature with a high attach rate among the premium car brands and are rapidly becoming increasingly common in mid-range vehicles.
GM’s OnStar was launched more than 20 years ago and is today the market leader worldwide with approximately 20.0 million users in total, out of which more than 16.0 million were in North America by year-end 2018. BMW has the second largest user base of an estimated 10.0 million connected vehicles. Mercedes-Benz currently ranks third as Mercedes Me Connect is now available in more than 45 countries and recently launched in the US, Canada, Australia, Thailand and New Zealand. PSA Group is also a leading carmaker with 4.8 million connected vehicles in Europe via Peugeot, Citroën and DS. The carmaker launched an emergency and assistance call service already in 2003. Additional automotive OEMs with over 3 million telematics subscribers also include Volkswagen, Hyundai and FCA Group.

“The automotive OEM telematics value chain spans multiple industries including automotive suppliers, telematics service providers (TSPs), carmakers, telecom industry players, as well as software and content providers”, said Martin Svegander, IoT Analyst at Berg Insight.

The unique connected car solution – Telia Sense – was announced today at TeliaSonera´s annual Internet of Things symposium. By using an app together with the installed hardware in the car, car owners get access to existing and coming smart features and upgrades simplifying everyday car ownership.

The connected car segment is in itself expected to grow from 0.2 EUR billion in 2012 to 1.8 EUR billion in 2017.

The purchase includes off-the-shelf products, equipment and a team of experts in the area of connected car and short range connectivity modules.

New IHS Automotive study forecasts more than 150 million connected cars on global highways by 2020

Growth in the automotive industry’s highly integrated and highly saturated connected car systems will yield approximately $14.5 billion in revenue from automotive data assets by 2020, according to a connected car study from IHS Automotive, driven by Polk.

In the study, Emerging Technologies: Big Data in the Connected Car, IHS Automotive forecasts there will be 152 million actively connected cars on global roads by 2020, a fraction of the estimated 18 billion Internet of Things (IoT) devices on the planet. The study estimates $14.5 billion of value from the OEM connected car landscape from a variety of Big Data assets found in the connected car – diagnostics, location, user experience (UX) /feature tracking, and adaptive driver assistance systems (ADAS)/autonomy. Significantly, the technology growth will drive sales, value-added services and customer experience in the sector for years to come.

“Traditionally Big Data has focused on the ‘4 V’s’ – volume, velocity, variety and veracity,” says Mark Boyadjis, senior analyst of infotainment and Human-Machine Interface (HMI) at IHS Automotive.
“But without understanding the fifth ’V,’ value and the value proposition, the collection of data from the connected car is literally a waste of time. It is important to understand how data from intelligently designed systems will drive billions of dollars of annual revenue between data assets, analytics, and end-user services.”

IHS Automotive estimates conservatively that more than 480 terabytes of data will be collected from the OEM connected car landscape in 2013 through millions of small data transmissions sent through more than 26 million connected cars. A combination of increased connected car sales and a growing scale of information coming from connected cars will result in the collection of some 11.1 petabytes of connected car data by 2020.

The rate at which the data are flowing from the connected car landscape is also growing dramatically. The study says that about 30 terabytes of data would be collected each day from the 152 million connected cars on the road in 2020, or about 350 megabytes per second, compared to about 15 megabytes per second in 2013.

At present, the majority of connected car data that is collected is used internally for diagnostics, location, speed, and vehicle status. By 2020, the IHS Automotive study expects four core categories of data to be most important to automakers, suppliers, third parties and end-users — diagnostics, location, user experience/features, and adaptive driver assistance systems/autonomy data. Because they will require so much more volume and variety, ADAS/Autonomy is expected to be the largest and most expensive data category in the future.

Boyadjis said:

“The most important challenge this industry has in front of it is organizing systems and defining roles in Big Data from the connected car. Who owns the data, the pipe, and the analytics is still yet to be determined, and will have to be before connected car data can be put to work efficiently.”

Risk Technology partners with Chipin to launch new telematics solution in Benelux

Vehicle telematics pioneer, Risk Technology, has signed an exclusive partnership agreement to work with the RAC for the launch of RAC Advance, a revolutionary new product for motorists that incorporates advanced crash detection technology, fuel saving, driver scoring and remote vehicle diagnostics and prognostics.

The RAC Advance solution incorporates the company’s leading-edge vehicle telematics technology in a range of solutions that include fleet, insurance and breakdown applications. Under the terms of the agreement, the RAC will also become Risk Technology’s UK delivery partner to increase the service available to their existing client relationships.

The launch of RAC Advance follows two years of ongoing co-operation between the two companies, with Risk Technology customising its vehicle telematics solutions to fit the RAC brand and its membership. Risk Technology’s IP is embedded inside the new, RAC Advance, matchbox-sized devices. In addition the company is providing a full software solution and administration portal that totally integrates with the RAC’s system and processes as well as those of its partners.

Following two years of testing, the RAC is predicting that RAC Advance will turn the breakdown industry ‘on its head’. RAC members will be able to remotely communicate with base to provide diagnostic information that could potentially identify certain vehicle faults before they result in a stressful or inconvenient breakdown. In addition members will be able to check multiple levels of performance and key information via an app on the driver’s phone or tablet.

Described by the RAC as ‘breakdown for the 21st century’, in the event of a breakdown RAC Advance will alert the response team who can remotely connect with the onboard diagnostics software to identify the fault and accurately position the motorist’s location, enabling the rescue service to quickly despatch a patrol, pre-equipped with the diagnosis, repair solution and parts. Should the diagnosis determine that the breakdown cannot be fixed at the roadside then a recovery vehicle can be swiftly arranged.

AT&T Network to Power Audiovox Telematics and Location-Based Service System.

AT&T* today announced an agreement with Audiovox Electronics Corp, a wholly owned subsidiary of VOXX International (NASDAQ :VOXX) to provide network connectivity to an Audiovox telematics and location-based service system designed to help consumers monitor, manage and maintain vehicle health and safety. According to Audiovox, the addressable market for this system is approximately 165 million cars.

The system is a do-it-yourself plug-in On-Board Diagnostic (OBDII) device that will work on all post 1996 model year vehicles. The system allows cell phone restriction while driving, vehicle tracking and even has a ‘lot spot’ feature that helps you find your car with Google maps for those times when you forget where you parked it at the mall. Maintenance alerts and reminders are sent directly to you, and the driver scoring feature lets you coach young drivers and monitor fuel consumption to conserve gas and save money.

The system is also the gateway to additional security and convenience features such as vehicle lock/unlock for remote access and remote start all managed through a smartphone app. For these upgrade features, a consumer would be required to purchase additional security and/or remote start modules and have them professionally installed.

The OBDII device will use an embedded HSPA wireless modem to send telematics and location data that can be accessed through a smartphone, tablet or desktop computer.

Audiovox plans to market its telematics solution through its nationwide distribution network, which is one of the most extensive in the industry.

Car industry must remodel itself to exploit the 'connected future'

First-of-its-kind report, ‘Connected Car Industry 2013′ details global challenges.

The Connected Car market will achieve mass-market penetration in the next few years, seeing the number of vehicles with built-in connectivity increase from 10 per cent of the overall market today to 90 per cent by 2020.

As this change takes place, the report identified four strategic themes: the transformation of the present-day dealership model, how these new services and connectivity will be paid for, concern over opening the car to third party providers, and the role of the mobile operator in powering this seismic change within the industry.

Redefining a century-old business model

Consumer demands around Connected Car services will require transforming a business model which has remained largely unchanged for over a century according to the report. With product lifecycles, payment interactions and customer service being traditionally measured in years, the Connected Car consumer will require a new service dynamic, more akin to the telecoms industry where such cycles are measured in months.

Service bundles, delivery channels, product pipelines, pricing and customer support will be heavily impacted, and in some cases new business models will need to be created from scratch as the dynamic between manufacturer, dealer and customer evolves.

1. Forecourt dynamics

Dealers have historically been able to get a car from sale agreement to delivery time in just 20 minutes. According to the report, the complexity of ‘extras’ and personalisation has increased this to an average of 1.5 hours and is only set to go up further as more connected services become available.

This has implications on the dealers cost of sale per vehicle, as well as the type of sales and technical skills required.

That however, can be off-set by the advantages a Connected Car sale provides a dealer. For example, automatically alerting customers and service dealerships to poor and failing performance in vehicles, enabling proactive and preventative maintenance requests and longer-term maintenance agreements.

Additionally, the report identifies a new relationship between car manufacturer and owner once they have left the forecourt. Branded app stores, upgrades to software solutions over-the-air and, on and off-board vehicle solutions will provide them with opportunities engage directly with car-owners and maintain a deeper, longer term and more interactive relationship.

2. Paying the bills

Many of the questions raised in the report concern over who will pay for what in this new Connected Car universe. Consumers are used to a one-off payment when purchasing a car, however car manufacturers have realised selling ‘just’ cars is no longer profitable.

Traditional telematics services have had low data usage, however Connected Car services are set to see these levels increase exponentially.

Audi announced in January that its 50,000 Audi connect® customers had used over 75 terabytes of data since launch in April 2011, four times the contents of the US Library of Congress.

Car manufacturers need to develop innovative pricing models that provide the flexibility and value that consumers demand from comparable services. General Motors has suggested that mobile operators could recognise vehicles as a second device on a customer’s data plan for a low monthly fee, or advertising models could be introduced to part-fund connectivity.

Flexibility in pricing was high on many automotive OEMs’ wish list, enabling tariffs to be developed around the unique uses of Connected Car services.

3. Collaboration is the key to success

The report found that the car manufacturing industry was looking to mobile operators as their partner of choice to not only enable connectivity, but to share their understanding and experience of building stronger and closer relationships with the hyper-connected consumer.

Collaborative teams from the car manufacturing industry and mobile operators need to be established to share knowledge and develop new innovative business models. With the report finding that not only will they be a key-enabler of the new business models required for the Connected Car industry to exist, but also to act as a catalyst for this change.

The report also highlights a number of areas that car manufacturers are looking to mobile operators to address. These include offering global connectivity arrangements, end-to-end services (incorporating software updates, data management etc) and data pricing.

4. Caution around app ecosystems

Although apps are expected to be part of the ecosystem, with manufacturers like Renault launching their own app stores, automotive manufacturers believe that issues of security and reliability mean Connected Cars are unlikely to become environments for open app development.

Overall, automotive OEMs believe that the potential market for apps in Connected Cars will be far smaller than has been experienced in the smartphone sector.

Futurist Ian Pearson believes the Connected Car will have an almost unimaginable transformational impact on our driving experience:

“In the further future, cars will come to you. They will take you where you want, and then you can just abandon them to go off to serve someone else. They will in effect offer a comfortable and socially inclusive form of public transport. This could even lead to buses disappearing from our streets.”

He continues: “Personalisation of the car environment will also become common. As you get in, the seat will automatically move to your preferred position, instructed by your phone. Even fabrics and other interior surfaces will be able to adapt their appearance and textures electronically to your taste. This could reduce the demand for ownership even further. Why own your own car when every car feels like it’s yours?”

ABI Research forecasts that the total revenue, comprising hardware shipments, and service subscriptions, for commercial fleet telematics in the government sector will increase from a total of $618 million at the end of 2012 to $1.26 billion globally by the end of 2018.

In the current economic climate, government and public sector agencies are under relentless pressure to reduce costs whilst at the same time maintain service levels, and are looking at ways of improving the utilization of their vehicle fleets and ensuring that these fleets comply with new regulatory and environmental legislation.

Gareth Owen, principal analyst at ABI Research, comments:

“The main market drivers behind the adoption of telematics in government fleets are government mandates designed, for example, to lower fuel consumption and gas emissions or to promote the use of alternative fuel vehicles.”

The US government is promoting the adoption of telematics in federal vehicles by simplifying the purchasing process. Federal agencies can ‘add’ appropriate telematics solutions to vehicles leased from GSA Fleet—the vehicle leasing arm of the federal government—and add the cost of the telematics to their monthly leasing plan. Key providers with pre-qualified Blanket Purchase Agreements to offer services in this way include NetworkFleet, Trimble, and Drivecam. There are similar purchasing initiatives at state and local levels.

Although there are no plans to mandate telematics adoption at the federal level yet, there are a number of initiatives underway to mandate the use of telematics at state government levels,” adds Owen. State departments typically have more sophisticated requirements as they operate specialized vehicles, such as snow ploughs and refuse vehicles, where there is a need to demonstrate that certain operations were carried out satisfactorily. As a result, telematics is increasingly effective in improving services levels, productivity, and in particular, disputing insurance claims.

Telematics providers who have developed specialized applications to meet such requirements include Teletrac and Sprint (with partner Geotab) in the United States and Masternaut and Digicore (via its Ctrack brand) in Europe.
