Quectel Certification Services offering speeds up time to market and takes away certification cost and complexities for IoT devices

Quectel Wireless Solutions, a global IoT solutions provider, today announces Quectel Certification Services, its range of IoT device certification and testing services that will enable customers to rapidly certify their IoT devices with regulatory organisations such as the FCC, IC, CE, ANATEL, RCM, KC, Jate and Telec and carrier organisations including AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Rogers, TELUS and Vodafone.

This service will enable customers’ devices to gain certifications in under eight weeks and is not only the fastest time to market for IoT device manufacturers, but also the industry’s most cost-effective offering.

Certification across these disciplines is complex to achieve, involves multiple layers of certification from disparate organisations and, typically, local and regional authorities award certifications for device deployments in their own territories. The Quectel Certification Services span regulatory, conformance and carrier compliance requirements plus certifications for industry-specific devices and environmental and safety-related certifications, such as such as ATmosphere EXplosible (ATEX), Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS), Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) and waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE).

“Going directly to certification or carrier organizations can result in it taking up to six months for IoT devices to gain certifications,” said Yoon Seungryoul, North American Certification Director, Quectel Wireless Solutions. “For many IoT use cases a six-month delay to launch is unacceptable and could make or break a proposition in markets where being first-to-launch is a critical differentiator. This is why Quectel, with our Quectel Certification Services, is bringing to customers our existing knowledge of certification and testing processes and our relationships with authorities, certification bodies, regulators, and carriers to provide our customers with the industry’s fastest and most cost-effective go-to-market offering.”

To further help customers, Quectel Certification Services offers a pre-scan service in its own labs so certification compliance can be assessed before applying to certification authorities, thereby saving time on non-compliant certification applications. A further benefit for customers that utilize both Quectel modules and antennas in their design, is that device testing is included for free. Quectel also offers technical support facilities and debugging solutions to address common, and not so common, certification issues.

Quectel’s capabilities include project management, administration, lab and carrier communications and management, checking and managing test scope, providing the necessary on-site support, and providing testing and debugging. In addition, Quectel will fix issues as they arise and negotiate waivers where appropriate.

“We’re proud to have launched Quectel Certification Services and we’re ready to provide full, global certification consultation and service to integrated device customers that have products that are based on Quectel modules,” added Seungryoul.

“Quectel Certification Services have been gaining certifications for Quectel’s own modules and customers’ devices for many years, so we’re delighted to be bringing this expertise to customers and helping them accelerate time-to-market and build a smarter world.”

LoRa Alliance® Expands Certification Program to Include SCHC over LoRaWAN® Enabling IPv6 Solutions

LoRaWAN Certification Test Tool Now Provides SCHC over LoRaWAN testing for end device certification.

The LoRa Alliance®, today announced that LoRaWAN certification is now available for end-devices using static context header compression (SCHC).

Certification is based on the LoRa Alliance technical specifications for IPv6 published last May, which enable the deployment of IPv6 over LoRaWAN solutions.

As previously announced, the first applications to leverage SCHC for IPv6 over LoRaWAN are smart metering and IoT applications in the smart grid, just two of many applications requiring the use of IPv6-based standards. Solutions using LoRaWAN for metering include proactive consumption monitoring, leak detection warnings and automatic shutoffs, and solutions for balancing electricity supply and demand. Easy and cost-effective to deploy, LoRaWAN is ideal for identifying and managing unmeasured losses, which currently reach into the billions of dollars each year, in addition to helping to conserve energy. Similar benefits can be realized for water and gas metering, with LoRaWAN CertifiedCM devices communicating over open standards enabling scale to address these growing markets.

“As deployments continue to grow to the tens or hundreds of millions of devices, the importance of using open standards has never been greater,” said Donna Moore, CEO and Chairwoman of the LoRa Alliance. “Certifying IPv6 over LoRaWAN for end-devices gives end users the level of certainty needed to deploy and benefit from IP-based solutions.”

“With vendors now able to certify LoRaWAN end-devices using SCHC, customers can confidently commit to massive utilities deployments. This will further drive digital industrialization across a wide variety of new markets and applications, which will in turn enable massive IoT.”

The certification of IPv6 over LoRaWAN using SCHC confirms that the end-device meets the functional requirements of the LoRaWAN IPv6 Adaptation Layer Specification TS010-1.0.0. End-devices must already be LoRaWAN CertifiedCM as a prerequisite of SCHC over LoRaWAN certification. The full testing suite for SCHC over LoRaWAN has been added to the LoRaWAN Certification Test Tool (LCTT), which is available for download now.

LoRaWAN IPv6 Adaptation Layer

The IPv6 adaptation layer facilitates and accelerates development of secure and interoperable applications over LoRaWAN and furthers the Alliance’s commitment to ease of use.. IP-based solutions, commonly found in enterprise and industrial solutions, can now be transmitted over LoRaWAN and easily integrated with cloud infrastructures. This allows developers to quickly enable internet-based applications, while significantly reducing time-to-market and total cost of ownership.

SIMCom NB-IoT module SIM7020G Gets Certified by Telstra

Recently, SIMCom NB-IoT module SIM7020G has successfully earned Telstra certification.

Previously, SIM7000E and SIM7600SA had been certified by Telstra.

Australia’s telecoms sector is basically monopolized by the big three, Telstra, Vodafone and Optus. Among them, Telstra runs Australia’s largest mobile and Wi-Fi networks, with a 40% market share. Since 2018, Telstra has launched NB-IoT networks in major Australian cities and regions to enhance its IoT capabilities.

Telstra COO Robyn Denholm says NB-IoT will accelerate IoT applications in Australia, providing Telstra’s mobile network with the opportunity to connect millions of new devices that send small amounts of data at extremely low power. She claims Telstra has connected more than two million IoT devices in Australia and the number of device connections is expected to grow rapidly in the next five years.

This delivered NB-IoT deployment is part of Telstra’s “future network” plan. It is a key pillar of Telstra’s AUD $3 billion (US $2.3 billion) capital investment to improve user experience. As part of its IoT initiative, Telstra has established partnerships in the field of smart cities with Tasmania government, Australian Federal Government, several local parliaments and the University of Tasmania to develop and test new IoT solutions at Launceston and promote IoT adoption.

SIMCom has been expanding its presence in the Australian market for a long time. The company gained some experience when SIM7000E and SIM7600SA were certified by Telstra before. During the SIM7020G certification process, Telstra also intended to verify its NB Network with SIMCom’s NB module. Through continuous interaction with IoTAS and discussion on test problems with MTK, with the continuous improvement of Telstra NB-IoT network, SIM7020G successfully passed the IoTAS pretest and finally got certified by Telstra.
