The installed base of smart street lights to reach 64 million worldwide by 2027

According to a new research report from the IoT analyst firm Berg Insight, the installed base of smart street lights amounted to 23.0 million globally at the end of 2022.

Growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 22.7 percent, the installed base will reach 63.8 million by the end of 2027.

Europe leads the adoption of smart street lighting technology and accounted for as much as 35 percent of the global installed base in 2022. North America is catching up with Europe and is growing robustly, accounting for around 37 percent of global shipment volumes in 2022. China was at the same time home to almost half of the installed base of smart street lights outside Europe and North America.

The world’s leading smart street lighting vendor was as of Q3-2023 Signify which with nearly 4.9 million connected street lights accounted for 18 percent of the global installed base. The company climbed to pole position after acquiring the former market leader Telensa in July 2021. Included in the top three were also US-based Itron and the Chinese Fonda Technology, of which the latter has most of its lighting controllers deployed in the domestic market. In total, the top three vendors accounted for almost a third of the global installed base of individually controlled smart street lights. Itron furthermore also constitutes a global leader in the networking segment.

Major smart street lighting players also include Quantela, Dimonoff, Ubicquia and LED Roadway Lighting from North America; Schréder from Belgium; Rongwen Energy Technology Group from China; Revetec and Umpi from Italy; Flashnet (Lucy Group) from Romania; Lucy Zodion (Lucy Group) and SSE from the UK; and ST Engineering Telematics Wireless from Singapore/Israel.

“The smart street lighting market experienced significant growth in 2022 and the first quarters of 2023, after a slowdown during 2021 following supply chain constraints and delays in the issuance of tenders for new projects in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic”, said William Ankreus, IoT analyst, Berg Insight.

Cities and municipalities have become increasingly aware of energy costs and environmental issues related to street lighting which has been a catalyst for growth in the smart street lighting market. While proprietary RF networking platforms have been the dominant connectivity type for smart street lighting deployments, the market is now clearly trending towards increased use of cellular communications in several parts of the world.

Semtech and CITiLIGHT Transform Smart City Street Lighting With LoRaWAN®

According to CITiLIGHT, the VELOCITi™ LMS smart lighting platform has saved 1.29 billion kWh of energy through smart street lighting implementation in more than 100 Indian cities.

Semtech Corporation, announced its collaboration with CITiLIGHT, provider of smart lighting solutions for smart cities, for its VELOCITi™ LMS lighting management system.

As street lights are fixed assets typically placed 40 to 50 meters apart from each other, VELOCITi LMS features Semtech’s LoRa® devices and the LoRaWAN® standard to communicate large packets of data over a long range. Per CITiLIGHT, more than 1 million street lights have been automated with the smart lighting solution that have saved up to 1.29 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy in more than 100 cities.

“Safety is a critical part of any city. As we move toward smarter cities, our view of citizen safety also needs to evolve. This is where city street lighting plays an important role. The spots in the city that are dark or less brightly lit are the ones that are most vulnerable to crime and accidents, and VELOCITi LMS is a solution to this issue,” said Aman Chawla, CEO of CITiLIGHT.

“Controlling street lighting is a unique challenge which entails work on both the hardware and network of the system. Semtech’s LoRa devices and LoRaWAN were the ideal solution for smart cities as the technology is able to solve both hardware and network needs due to each street light requiring to be metered, while accounting for additional data such as daylight, motion and temperature.”

The VELOCITi LMS system is able to keep street lights connected and monitored in real time, from anywhere on the globe, without any dependence on field personnel. Any commands given to the street lights, like change of lighting schedule or change in intensity, are executed within seconds as the system offers less than five second command latency and 0.5-1% accuracy on metered data according to CITiLIGHT. Semtech’s LoRa devices and the LoRaWAN standard complement the street light system as the technology can support larger data packets based on a city’s needs and communication over a long range.

Dhyan and Senet Announce Partnership to Offer Turnkey LoRaWAN® Smart Street Lighting Solution for Cities and Utilities

Dhyan, the device management experts, today announced a turnkey solution partnership with Senet to manage smart streetlights powered by Senet’s LoRaWAN® network service.

Senet is a leading provider of cloud-based software and services platforms for the on-demand build-out of Internet of Things (IoT) networks and operates the largest public carrier-grade LoRaWAN network in the US. With interoperability testing completed, the turnkey nature of this solution makes it easy to add smart streetlights to existing LoRaWAN networks such as those deployed for water utility Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) projects or other municipal and enterprise applications.

LoRaWAN is a long range low power, Wide Area Network protocol designed to wirelessly connect low power devices to the internet in networks of any size, and targets key IoT requirements such as bi-directional communication, end-to-end security, mobility and localization services. Its long range and low power make it ideal for smart street lighting projects, as it provides a greater connectivity range than Zigbee or Wi-SUN without the expense of cellular.

Senet pioneered the use of LoRaWAN for commercial IoT deployments in the US, with significant success deploying high-capacity networks for municipal water utility districts across the United States. Dhyan’s central management system technology is in use in IoT deployments worldwide, including a growing number of smart street light networks. This partnership and integration bring together two leaders in hardware, software, and cloud-based network and device management to create a world-class smart street lighting solution.

The two companies are currently collaborating on commercial deployments and exploring Proof-of-Concept installations with several municipalities. Both organizations will also be attending the upcoming Smart Cities Connect conference in Columbus, Ohio, April 4-7. Senet will be participating in a workshop titled Sensorize Your City!, Monday, April 4th from 1-5pm EST.

“The technical attributes of LoRaWAN make it ideal for public lighting systems which can be a valuable anchor application for smart cities or easily added to an existing municipal LoRaWAN network deployment,” said Bruce Chatterley, CEO of Senet.

Nordic-based cellular IoT luminaire controller makes LED streetlighting instantly smart

Developed by Urban Control, the Urban Node 324 is said to be plug&play simple to install and can scale cost-effectively from one streetlight up to millions.

Nordic Semiconductor today announces that leading smart city solutions provider, Urban Control, has specified a Nordic nRF9160 multi-mode NB-IoT/LTE-M System-in-Package (SiP) into each of its Urban Node 324 city streetlight LED luminaire controllers.

In operation, each Urban Node 324 simply plugs into an industry-standard ‘Zhaga’ LED lighting socket and connects over the local cellular IoT network where it can then be remotely controlled by any smart city Central Management System (CMS) that is based on the common ‘TALQ’ smart city standard.

Urban Control says its Urban Node 324 controller delivers all the benefits of smart city LED street lighting. These include the ability to precisely control brightness and thus energy consumption and costs depending on actual local conditions; the ability to dynamically respond to sudden changes in pedestrian numbers or road traffic; the ability to monitor energy consumption in real-time; and the ability to identify and even preempt faults and precisely target maintenance crews – again reducing operating costs and unnecessary maintenance via environmentally-polluting, service-van inspections.

The operational simplicity of each Urban Node 324 comes from them being engineered to work via a lightweight-machine-to-machine (LwM2M) platform called ‘ALASKA’ from award-winning scarce resource IoT device management and security specialist, IoTerop. This leverages the two most common smart city IoT standards: ‘uCIFI’ and ‘TALQ’. It additionally uses state-of-the-art embedded design engineering to minimize on-air bandwidth and get power consumption levels low enough to support battery-powered smart city sensors and devices.

Urban Control Innovation & Development Director, Miguel Lira, explains:

World's largest LoRaWAN® smart street lighting projects just launched

NNNCo partners with technology provider Wellness TechGroup to roll out one of LoRaWAN®’s largest smart street lighting projects in the world.

Sydney-based National Narrowband Network Company (NNNCo), the 100% IoT telco, has signed a contract with technology provider Wellness TechGroup, to provide IoT network coverage to 70,000 smart streetlights in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay.

The project will cover 200 square kilometres and provide smart street lighting to more than 1.3 million people, improving community and road safety, and reducing carbon emissions by up to 80%. This initiative will also establish an infrastructure-based network that can accommodate other smart city initiatives.

NNNCo, Wellness TechGroup and their partners will replace Montevideo’s existing lighting system with LED technology and roll out a powerful and interoperable remote management system, which is designed to reduce carbon emissions by 31,500 tonnes of CO2 per year, a decrease of approximately 80%. The project will also improve the quality of public lighting service and provide greater efficiency and operations management to the whole city.

The Smart Street Lighting project will see the deployment of 70,000 new streetlights with LED technology using Wellness TechGroup’s CMS WeLight Manager software, LoRaWAN® Actis Nema 7 LPC nodes and NNNCo’s LoRaWAN® network. Smart Street lighting provides a unique opportunity to improve public and road safety, energy efficiency and customer amenity via network and application management software and the integration with other urban smart applications like waste management and water conservation.

NNNCo, Australia’s leading LoRaWAN® network operator with a carrier licence, provides a scalable IoT network service and platform to enable enterprise-grade solutions for businesses and the government. LoRaWAN®, now an international ITU standard, is a proven, scalable low-power, wide-area networking protocol technology that wirelessly connects devices to the internet and manages communication between end-node devices and network gateways.

Wellness TechGroup and NNNCo will be able to provide added services to the city of Montevideo as the contract signed include the opportunity to bring third parties customers across the same gateways into the LoRaWAN network. The Australian network provider will be able to service customers across the whole city, using the NNNCo N2N-DL data aggregation layer and the NNNCo N-Tick device interoperability programme.

Wellness TechGroup will roll out 70,000 Actis Plus Nema 7 LCP nodes for remote control of light points. The Actis Plus Nema 7 nodes will connect with WeLight Manager TALQ certified CMS, powerful and leading-edge software that will provide real-time information on all the data from the intelligent public lighting service. Luminaries become effectively a data-enabled lighting server, true central nodes and form part of a smart city IoT ecosystem, beyond lighting.

On the heels of launching its newest LoRaWAN® gateway, Kerlink, a specialist in solutions dedicated to the IoT, partnered with CITiLIGHT, the leading smart-lighting solution provider in India, to collaborate and deploy large smart street-lighting projects in India and internationally.

CITiLIGHT, whose systems manage more than 1 million streetlights in India, completed six projects using Kerlink IoT gateways in 2021, including the largest smart-lighting installation in the country. That project serves a population of 1.2 million people and is located in Thane district of Maharashtra. It covers an area of 67 km2 and includes 35,000 lights, of which 18,000 operate with LoRaWAN® technology.

CITiLIGHT, an OEM partner to leading Indian and global lighting companies, has completed smart-lighting projects in 112 municipalities and five smart cities and several other districts in India. Its solutions automatically manage streetlights, road lights and highway lights via VELOCITi LMS™ (Lighting Management System), the company’s web and smartphone-compatible application. It controls light-change schedules, detects faults, and notifies system owners about their streetlight networks on a real-time basis.

CITiLIGHT’s LoRaWAN® smart-lighting projects are powered by Kerlink’s Wirnet™ iStations, a long-range and low-power gateway that comes with exclusive features for remote monitoring and advanced radio network configuration. These gateways specifically meet the standard requirements of municipalities and other users that want to adopt the efficiency benefits of the IoT in customized, reliable networks that can connect high volumes of end devices and manage millions of bidirectional messages every day. More than 100 of these gateways have been installed in India’s smart-lighting systems.

CITiLIGHT estimates that streetlighting consumes as much as 40 per cent of the power used by municipal infrastructure, and in many cases implementing smart systems can deliver a return on investment (ROI) within three years, along with increasing the overall safety of citizens by reducing the number of accidents on the streets.

According to industry reports, the installed base of smart street lighting is increasing at a CAGR of 24.8 percent globally. The 16.2 million smart streetlights operating in 2020 are estimated to increase to 48.8 million by 2025. CITiLIGHT, with its experience of automating a million-plus streetlights in India, expects to play a vital role in this growth on a global stage.

The ALASKA Lightweight Machine to Machine (LwM2M) platform works with uCIFI and TALQ standards to enable smart city solutions that are interoperable, scalable and secure.

Urban Control, a leading provider of smart city solutions, has embedded ALASKA, a Lightweight Machine to Machine (LwM2M) platform from IoTerop, a leader in IoT device management, to manage its smart city devices.

The first implementation of this platform is the Urban Node 324 cellular IoT streetlight controller, launched earlier this month.

LwM2M, uCIFI and TALQ – the importance of standards

Using LwM2M enables Smart Cities to leverage uCIFI, the first unified data model that was created to address IoT interoperability for smart city applications. Additionally, the TALQ Consortium has defined a globally accepted interface standard for smart city device networks, meaning that a single CMS can configure, control, command and monitor heterogeneous smart city device networks. These three standards create a powerful tool that allows Smart Cities to be truly interoperable and scalable.

Constrained devices can more easily be connected, and the optimization of bandwidth makes it more efficient and less expensive to connect. Devices modeled include streetlights, water meters and distribution monitors, waste management devices, parking meters, traffic monitors, air-quality monitors, smart buildings, as well as safety and security devices.

Adherence to globally-recognized standards is imperative, as it allows for the optimization of bandwidth constraints and provides a reduction of data volume used by urban smart objects. Device security is also a considerable benefit in an era when cyber security has never been so important. ALASKA follows devices throughout their entire lifecycles, from activation to firmware updates to decommissioning, all managed remotely.

The installed base of smart street lights approaches 20 million units worldwide

According to a new research report from the IoT analyst firm Berg Insight, the installed base of smart street lights amounted to 16.2 million globally at the end of 2020.

Growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 24.8 percent, the installed base will reach 48.8 million by the end of 2025. Europe leads the adoption of smart street lighting technology and accounted for as much as 35 percent of the global installed base in 2020. North America continues to lag behind Europe but is nevertheless growing robustly, accounting for around 24 percent of global shipment volumes in 2020. China was at the same time home to more than half of the installed base of smart street lights outside Europe and North America, while the Rest of World region excluding China constitutes the fastest growing market.

The world’s leading smart street lighting vendor was at the end of 2020 UK-based Telensa which with nearly 2.1 million connected street lights accounted for 12.8 percent of the global installed base. Included in the top three were also Dutch Signify and US-based Sensus, of which the latter primarily serves the market through its SELC brand. In total, the top three vendors accounted for nearly a third of the global installed base of individually controlled smart street lights. Major smart street lighting players also include CIMCON Lighting, Dimonoff, Acuity Brands, LED Roadway Lighting, Current and Ubicquia from North America; Lucy Zodion and SSE from the UK; Rongwen Energy Technology Group from China; Revetec from Italy; Schréder from Belgium; Flashnet from Romania; and ST Engineering Telematics Wireless from Israel/Singapore. US-based Itron furthermore constitutes a global leader in the networking and CMS segments.

Levi Ostling, smart cities analyst, Berg Insight, said:

“The smart street lighting market continued to experience healthy growth throughout 2020 despite the Covid-19 pandemic, though the market might see a slight hick-up in its growth tempo during 2021 following some temporary delays in the issuance of tenders for new projects in the midst of the crisis.”

A number of new growth opportunities is at the same time emerging in the market. Procurements for large-scale deployments in the South American market have for example in the past two years really started to pick up pace while activity is also growing in the potentially huge Indian market.

“We have now also reached the point in time where the first large-scale replacements of early smart street lighting technology installations start to appear”, continued Mr. Ostling.

In June, Telensa became the first vendor to announce a major replacement project and a growing number of similar projects are expected to follow in early adopter markets such as the UK in the next years.

Smart city technology markets continue to evolve at a high pace

Berg Insight, the world’s leading IoT market research provider, today released the latest edition of its comprehensive smart city technology report comprising in-depth studies of five key technology areas – smart street lighting, smart parking, smart waste collection, urban air quality monitoring and smart city surveillance.

In 2020, the global installed base of individually controlled smart street lights amounted to 13.0 million units (excluding China). The corresponding figures for the smart parking and smart waste sensor technology markets were at the same time 957,000 and 657,000 units respectively.

Smart parking sensors refers to in-ground or surface-mounted parking occupancy detection sensors while smart waste sensor technology consists of fill-level sensor devices that may either be pre-integrated into bins and containers, for example as a smart bin offering, or retrofitted on existing collection points.

The smart street lighting market has now gained significant traction and its installed base will grow at a robust CAGR of 23.4 percent to reach 37.4 million units in 2025.

The number of installed smart parking sensors is expected to see a slightly slower growth of 21.6 percent (CAGR) while the smart waste sensor technology market will be the fastest growing of the three with a CAGR of 29.8 percent.

A more nascent smart city technology area is the field of non-regulatory urban air quality monitoring, which comprises increasingly small and low-cost air quality monitoring devices that can serve as valuable complements to traditional regulatory monitoring stations. In 2020, the number of such non-regulatory air quality monitoring devices installed in outdoor urban environments amounted to 73,000 units globally and will surpass 300,000 units in 2025.

The largest of the five covered smart city application areas was meanwhile the smart city surveillance market, which reached a global market value of € 9.9 billion in 2020. The market, which includes both fixed and mobile video and audio surveillance solutions, is expected to grow at a CAGR of 19.7 percent throughout the forecast period.

Levi Ostling, smart city analyst, Berg Insight, said:

“Looking just at the sheer volume of various types of smart city device shipments, China has in the past few years outrun most other countries in the world and now plays in a league of its own.”

Outside China, Europe has emerged as the leading smart city technology adopter and North America constitutes the second largest market. An exception is however the North American market for smart city surveillance, which was about 27 percent larger than the European in 2020.

“While publicly funded deployments of smart city technologies in many cases were delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, they were more importantly not cancelled thanks to their growing status as key infrastructure projects,” continued Mr. Ostling when asked about the Covid-19 impact on the overall market.

The pandemic has in many ways highlighted the benefits of remotely managed infrastructure and the need for smart city technologies, which should help the smart city market to recuperate strongly after a short period of slightly reduced growth.

Liveable Cities Selects Sierra Wireless LPWA Solution for Smart City Applications

Liveable Cities’ smart city solutions empower municipalities to enable safer and more efficient communities using existing street lighting infrastructure.

Sierra Wireless today announced that Liveable Cities, a division of Canada-based LED Roadway Lighting, has selected Sierra Wireless’ LPWA solution to enable smart city applications.

Liveable Cities is using Sierra Wireless Ready-to-Connect HL78 modules for its SilQ Luminaire streetlight and the tool-less Sensor Platform (TSC) ANSI Controller, which can add radar, pollution and noise sensors to transform any streetlight into a network that provides data to cities to help them reduce pollution and keep citizens safe.

The Sierra Wireless LPWA solution connects sensors integrated in the Luminaire streetlight or TSP platform and securely transmits speed, pollution and noise data over cellular networks to Liveable Cities’ SMARTLINX cloud platform for analysis. City planners can use the data to understand speed, pollution and acoustic patterns across the city, evaluate effectiveness of reduction measures over time and make informed decisions about where to deploy additional resources.

The installed base of smart street lights to surpass 30 million worldwide by 2023

According to a new research report from the IoT analyst firm Berg Insight, the installed base of smart street lights was 10.4 million worldwide at the end of 2018.

Growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 24.5 percent, the installed base will reach 31.2 million in 2023.

Europe is the leading smart street lighting market accounting for nearly 40 percent of the installed base. Characterised by a higher degree of utility ownership of street lighting assets, the North American market has seen a more scattered uptake of smart street lighting but is nevertheless home to several of the world’s largest deployments. North America accounted for around 30 percent of the global installed base in 2018. The Rest of World accounted for 31 percent of the global installed base in 2018 and the Chinese market constitutes a large part of these installations.

The world’s leading smart street lighting vendor is UK-based Telensa which accounted for 14.4 percent of the global installed base of connected endpoints in Q3-2019. Included in the top three are also Signify and Sensus, of which the latter became a top player within the market in 2017 through its acquisition of the major smart street lighting vendor SELC. Together, these three vendors account for a third of the global installed base of individually controlled smart street lights. US-based Itron is also a leading player in the networking segment, having acquired Silver Spring Networks in 2018. Other important smart street lighting vendors include Rongwen Energy Technology Group from China; CIMCON Lighting, Acuity Brands, Current, LED Roadway Lighting and DimOnOff from North America; Lucy Zodion and SSE from the UK; Reverberi Enetec from Italy; Flashnet from Romania and Telematics Wireless from Israel.

Levi Ostling, IoT Analyst, Berg Insight, said:

“While various proprietary RF mesh or star networks today account for the majority of smart street lighting installations, the adoption of LPWA technologies such as NB-IoT and LoRa is now growing fast, particularly in the European and Asian markets.”

Telensa today announced the launch of Urban IQ. A future-proof, open solution designed to connect sensors using smart streetlight infrastructure and visualise the data collected.

Sensor Hub also provides local wireless connectivity for sensors near the pole such as those in waste bins or drains. Sensor types already deployed include air quality, environmental, waste, drainage, road quality and gunshot detection. Products have been running in pilots for the past 12 months in the US and UK and are now commercially available.

Lighting Up Smart Cities Around the World with the LwM2M Technology

A little over a century ago we had lamplighters. Today our street lighting uses electrical grids and timers. Tomorrow, thanks to Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) public lighting will likely be more akin to Lighting-as-a Service (LaaS) leveraging networks, sensors and predictive analytics to provide cars and pedestrians with lighting on a personalized, as-needed basis with the maintenance done much faster at a reduced cost.

According to a new report from ABI Research, “the annual revenue from smart street lighting will grow by 31% between 2018 and 2026 to reach $1.7 billion in annual revenue by 2026”. Migrating street lighting under the umbrella of digital control opens up a new horizon of automation and predictive monitoring.

Smart Streetlighting: The Low-Hanging Fruit of Smart City Initiatives

Thanks to embedded sensors and digital networks, street lighting is becoming the bedrock of smart city initiatives. They now have the power to collect and transmit information that helps cities to monitor, maintain and adjust its infrastructure to their constituents in real-time.

Managing more than 3 million streetlights around the world, Itron has been recognized as a leader by the Navigant Research Leaderboard on Smart Street Lighting. City of Harrisburg and Telensa Trial Smart City Technologies Using Connected Streetlight Infrastructure

Pennsylvania capital piloting traffic analytics, air quality monitoring and smart waste sensor systems using Telensa’s connected street lighting system.

Telensa, a world leader in smart street lighting and smart city data applications, today announced that it is working with the City of Harrisburg to trial smart city technologies featuring smart sensors for traffic, air quality and waste monitoring.

The City deployed a Telensa smart street lighting system in 2016 and saw the potential to use this physical and network infrastructure to roll out additional smart technologies.

The Smart City project is now deployed and Telensa partner sensors, including CA Traffic for traffic analytics, Libelium for air quality and FarSite for waste monitoring, have been installed. The data from these sensors is analysed and combined with existing lighting data and displayed in a smart city dashboard. This provides custom visualisation of multiple sensors, showing correlations across departments and driving insights for smarter, more efficient and joined up services. Harrisburg is also set to test the use of technology for Traffic Adaptive Lighting, whereby groups of streetlights can be dynamically adjusted in the central management system using real-time, raw traffic data received from a radar-based sensor. This adaptive lighting results in energy savings of up to 30%.

Harrisburg has previously worked with Telensa to deploy over 4,000 connected streetlights spanning the whole city, leading to utility bill reductions of 60-70%. The city realised the additional value of their lighting infrastructure as a platform for smart city sensors, providing a power source and secure cloud connection, and located in citizen-dense areas yet positioned safely out of reach.

Annual Smart Street Lighting Revenue Will Grow 10-Fold to Reach US$1.7 Billion in 2026

Annual revenue from smart street lighting will grow at CAGR 31% to reach US$1.7 billion in 2026.

Street lighting programs today, and over the next several years, will focus on replacing conventional lamps with LED lamps. However, only 20 percent of LED street lamps will be truly “smart” through integration with lighting controls systems.

This imbalance will slowly correct itself and by 2026, central management systems will connect to over two-thirds of all new LED street light installations.

Smart street lighting vendors such as Telensa, Telematics Wireless, DimOnOff, Itron, and Signify have been the most successful in benefiting from their cost-optimized products, market expertise, and aggressive commercial approach,” said Adarsh Krishnan Principal Analyst at ABI Research.

“And, there are additional opportunities to be had by smart city suppliers leveraging street pole infrastructure by hosting of wireless connectivity infrastructure, environmental sensors, and even intelligent cameras. The challenge is finding a feasible business model that encourages deployment of multi-sensor solutions cost-effectively at scale.”

Smart street lighting applications that have seen the most adoption are (in order of priority): remote scheduling of dimming profiles based on seasonal changes, time shifts, or special social events; metering individual street light energy consumption for accurate usage-based billing; asset management to improve maintenance planning; and finally, sensor-based adaptive lighting.

Regionally, street lighting deployments are unique in a vendor and technology approach, as well as end-market requirements. In 2018, North America has been a leader in smart street lighting accounting for 31 percent of the global install base, followed by Europe and the Asia Pacific. In Europe, non-cellular LPWA network technologies have a dominant share of smart streetlights today but will cede some market share to cellular LPWA network technologies, especially as NB-IoT based end-devices become more commercially available in Q2 2020.

By 2026, the Asia Pacific region will have the largest installed base of smart streetlights, accounting for over one-third of global installations. This growth is due to China and India, both which not only have ambitious LED street lamp retrofit programs but also are building local LED component manufacturing facilities to lower lamp costs.

“In India and China, LED streetlights have seen a very low penetration of lighting control systems due to a nascent domestic solution vendor ecosystem and international vendors that are unable to adapt their solution to meet local market requirements for innovative yet low-cost products,” concluded Krishnan.

Low-cost solutions based on cellular LPWA network technologies followed by non-cellular LPWA network technologies will witness the most growth in the APAC region, accounting for a market share of 48 percent and 36 percent respectively of the total install base in 2026.

Itron and VINCI Energies to Build Australia’s Largest Standalone Smart Lighting Project

Transport Canberra and City Services to Utilize Itron Network to Enable Smart Energy and City Services in Canberra, Australia’s Capital City.

Itron, Inc., VINCI Energies’ Electrix and Transport Canberra and City Services (TCCS) are working together to create an Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) network to support smart lighting and smart city and energy solutions in Canberra, Australia’s capital city.

TCCS, which manages streetlights and other critical infrastructure in Canberra, will deploy Itron’s multi-purpose network across the region, connecting streetlights on the network that will be managed by Itron’s Streetlight.Vision central management software. This project represents the largest standalone smart lighting project in Australia and the first energy performance contract in Australia and Oceania.

With the Energy Performance Contract, Electrix, leading provider of electrical engineering, construction and maintenance services, will operate, maintain and upgrade the streetlight network over a seven-year period. This innovative model will help TCCS achieve significant energy savings, accelerate progress toward environmental goals, minimize investment risk and help manage to fixed annual allocated budgets over the contract term.

Initial benefits of the network will include increased electrical safety and energy savings from energy efficient fittings, which can be tracked with metering on the lights. Long term, the Canberra community will benefit from a Smart City Lab, which will be developed to test and develop additional smart city solutions such as, smart waste management, traffic monitoring, pollution sensing and other applications using the same network platform. A new digital control maintenance management system will also be delivered as part of the upgrade to offer real-time monitoring of the network to automatically detect faults such as lamp failures or cable problems.

This will be the start of a seven-year collaboration that will focus on three key outcomes: keeping the lights on, getting energy efficient and contributing to Canberra being a smart city.

Huawei Launched Connected City Lighting Solution, Saving Municipal Lighting Energy by 80%

Today at CeBIT 2016, Huawei debuted its Connected City Lighting Solution, the industry’s first Internet of Things (IoT) lighting solution with multi-level intelligent control.

Huawei Connected City Lighting Solution connects street lamps to the IoT and adopts a GIS-based management system, enabling cities to enhance the control and performance of every street lamp. The solution provides municipal managers with status information on each lamp, in every street and enables precise control of on-off switches and brightness of individual street lamps, allowing on-demand lighting and a reduction in energy consumption by up to 80%.

According to The Climate Group, there are approximately 304 million street lamps around the world, and the number is expected to reach 352 million by 2025. Street lamps are almost ubiquitous in cities. While these lamps bring convenience to people’s lives, they also consume a vast amount of energy and increase management costs for municipalities. For example, London has approximately 35,000 street lamps, resulting in an estimated total power consumption of 56,000,000kWh per annual, together with inspection costs and maintenance fees, the street lamps significantly impact municipal expenses. Huawei Connected City Lighting Solution is designed to address these issues.

Integrated Smart Lighting Policies to Ensure High Energy Efficiency

With Huawei’s Connected City Lighting Solution, each street lamp is equipped with a power and brightness controller. Unlike industry-standard access methods such as through Wi-Fi, Huawei adopts 6LoWPAN technology, which has lower power consumption, and can automatically diagnose, network, and trouble-shoot problems, as well as enable better interaction between street lamps and other smart devices such as sensors. To enhance the control and performance of street lamps, the solution integrates a series of preset smart lighting policies to:

  • Automatically calculate lighting duration based on local longitude and latitude, and dynamically adjust lighting duration according to the specific season, month, and day.
  • Smartly adjust brightness by connecting built-in brightness sensors with third-party traffic and people flow sensors, or based on weather and other environment conditions.

Huawei Connected City Lighting Solution pares LED lamps with smart lighting polices. When compared with conventional street lamps, such as high pressure sodium lamps, they help reduce energy consumption by up to 80%.

Visible Management and Online Inspection to Prevent Failures

Huawei’s solution adopts a GIS-based management system, which displays comprehensive information about the street lamps, including the number of lamps in each street, their current status, as well as their installation position and time. Using this solution, one person can manage thousands of lamps in different streets.

Multi-level Smart Control for Enhanced Protection and Reliability

Traditional street lamps are controlled collectively at a central point, and cannot be controlled individually. Huawei Connected City Lighting Solution addresses this challenge by providing multi-level smart controls, which comprise network smart controls on the first level and local smart controls on a secondary level. The agile IoT gateways and street lamp controllers are equipped with lightweight components to execute lighting policies and deliver a two-level localized decision-making mechanism.

All-layer Openness to Build a Smart City

Huawei Connected City Lighting Solution adopts an all-layer open architecture:

  • Its base-layer processor development can be based on lightweight open-source LiteOS, facilitating standardization and efficient connections among third-party devices.
  • The agile gateways support a virtualized architecture, enabling the development and installation of customized applications by partner companies.
  • The agile controllers also provide third-party application systems with a standard northbound interface, helping to better integrate various service components, allowing comprehensive interaction with the smart transportation, environment monitoring, and municipal management systems.

Samsung Electronics and Silver Spring Networks Partner on Smart LED Street Lights Solution

Internet of Things Industry Leaders Accelerate Path to Smart Cities.

Today at Light + Building, the world’s leading trade show for lighting and building services technology, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and Silver Spring Networks, Inc. announced a partnership to develop a networked LED street lights solution, helping to cut costs and simplify connected lighting componentry for luminaire manufacturers. This will accelerate the road to smart cities for municipalities, utilities, transportation departments and other outdoor lighting network operators. Networked LED public lighting systems deliver significant energy and operational savings, helping cities, utilities and other entities quickly establish a broad network canopy that can also be utilized for Smart City and Internet of Things (IOT) applications, such as traffic and parking management, environmental sensing and citizen safety.

The joint smart street light solution will be designed to enable luminaire manufacturers to take advantage of a pre-integrated networked photocell with auto-configuration and management capabilities, lowering costs and simplifying the end solution for customers. The collaboration will enable advanced capabilities such as wiring multiple sensors to a single driver, dynamic override commands, and advanced management of configuration files and firmware images across large-scale lighting networks.

The solution will build on Silver Spring’s IPv6- based Gen5 wireless networking platform and SLV6 smart city management software, and the Samsung Smart Lighting Module (SLM) that powers the Samsung Smart Lighting Platform (SLP). SLM is an all-in-one lighting application-specific wireless and wired connectivity solution that can be embedded into a sensor bus for smart cities and other IOT environments. Samsung SLM supports both wired and wireless communication protocols, including DALI and Bluetooth, to help operators seamlessly connect to various sensor networks and smart devices. SLM enables smart lighting luminaires to act as nodes for diverse smart lighting environments.

Vodafone announced today a new agreement to become a global Internet of Things (IoT) managed connectivity partner for Philips Lighting, a Royal Philips company and the global leader in lighting.

Under the agreement, the two companies will enable city authorities worldwide to implement smart street lighting systems which will be connected wirelessly, saving energy and making maintenance easier and more efficient.

The Philips CityTouch street lighting management system will use Vodafone’s world-leading machine-to-machine (M2M) network to connect individual light points. Every connected street lamp will contain a Vodafone M2M SIM. City authorities can then monitor and manage lighting through a user-friendly and highly flexible system while engineers will be able to check performance, identify faults and control the lighting remotely.

The joint offering allows city authorities to create an infrastructure that is easily scalable, and will be able to support other smart city applications in future.

Vodafone M2M Director, Erik Brenneis, said:
‘Lighting plays a key role in the smart city. Our agreement with Philips will see this technology transforming cities across the world backed by Vodafone’s world-leading innovation, technologies and networks.’

Option acquires Innolumis and Lemnis Public Lighting

Option announces the acquisition of the shares of the Dutch LED lighting companies Lemnis Lighting BV Public and Innolumis Public Lighting BV and merges the two companies into a single commercial organization under the name Innolumis Public Lighting.

By merging the two LED companies, Option creates a strong LED enterprise that will continue to serve the Dutch public lighting market from its new location in Amersfoort and will further expand the activities in Belgium, Europe and worldwide.

Lemnis and Innolumis shared the same portfolio but had geographically divided the market and ran separate organizations. Following the merge, the single organization will combine the strengths of both organizations.

Option has found a strong partner and its acquisition fits perfectly in its ‘Internet of Things’ strategy.

The advanced technology of Option and Innolumis allows the creation of smart lighting to provide citizen comfort by real-time surveillance of traffic, parking, road conditions, temperature mapping, CO2 emissions and particulate matter, and maintain safety with real-time integrated camera technology including license plate recognition, people tracking and intrusion detection.

LED streetlights represent a saving of 60 to 70%, in addition, savings are increased by an additional 50% with the possibility of dimming the LED lamps.

With the integration of the two companies public-private partnerships (PPP) in cities and towns are possible with the aim to support the tasks of the government and improve the quality of life of citizens.

A pilot project will take place in the city of Leuven.

smart lightingWith the demand of cities and municipalities for energy-efficient street lighting, coupled with smart technology, both companies are on track to make the streets safer, more economical, more environmentally friendly and more pleasant.

The LED lamps have been developed according to the mesopic Innolumis concept with the correct light passing before the human eye, especially in situations of low light. Mesopic light sources have red, green and blue (RGB) LEDs that provide an optimal light spectrum with little energy. Gert Grolleman: “We do not sell light but sight.”

Innolumis has an installed base of 60,000 LED lamps, a large number of them in the Netherlands including Schiphol Airport and has a steady stream of repeat orders.

The company foresees a turnover of EUR 6 million this year with a positive operating cash flow from the second half. The figures of Innolumis, a 100% subsidiary of Option will be included in the reporting of Option.
