SHV Energy implements global remote LPG tank monitoring with Sigfox Netherlands’ 0G network and reduces carbon emissions

Off-grid energy distributor improves efficiency, sustainability and lowers costs with real-time asset monitoring.

SHV Energy and Sigfox are rolling out a global LPG tank level monitoring solution.

The implementation has started in France, Belgium and Germany and is already generating lower carbon emissions and improved customer satisfaction. Over the next three years, 50,000 units will be rolled out worldwide. Sigfox’s IoT (Internet of Things) asset monitoring capability enables SHV Energy to reduce the cost of tank level monitoring, while increasing efficiency and productivity.

SHV Energy, a leading global distributor of off-grid energy such as LPG, LNG, biofuels and renewables, with 30 million customers in 25 countries and 16,700 employees, selected to work with Sigfox, a world’s leading IoT communication service provider and 0G network pioneer.

SHV Energy set-up a Telemetry Centre of Excellence and used Sigfox’ solutions and partner Aton SB S.p.A to deliver a homogeneous, global solution for tank level monitoring that provides sophisticated data analytics, and connected smart devices for daily tank level readings. SHV Energy can now optimize delivery routes and schedules, and has improved sustainability by reducing the firm’s carbon footprint.

Additionally, the Sigfox-based solution is considerably more cost-effective than cellular alternatives. Savings stem from low-cost components, no SIM cards, and modest connectivity costs.

Simon Gilchrist, Global Programme Lead, SHV Energy, explains:

“Data collection is critical to the success of our business. Our efforts to streamline this process have been boosted tremendously through the Sigfox solution. We are now able to gather information at an extremely low-cost point, and this enables the wider scale rollout of a homogeneous tank monitoring system across the globe.”

“Sigfox has exceeded our expectations. Its network and technology partners will help to meet our strategic objectives of harnessing the power of telemetry to the fullest.”

“The global Sigfox 0G network has delivered once again when it comes to providing connectivity solutions that offer a direct environmental benefit. Across multiple territories, and with the support of our Sigfox Operators, our solution for SHV Energy is helping to lower CO2 emissions as remote tank level monitoring ultimately reduces the number of overall site visits and eliminates unnecessary visits,” adds Ian Terblanche, Senior Vice President of Global Sales at Sigfox.

Monnit Releases IoT Propane Tank Solution

Monnit Corporation today announced the release of the ALTA® Propane Tank Monitor which allows users to check propane levels from anywhere.

With the ability to integrate with both Sr and Jr R3D® Remote Ready gauges, the monitor offers a plug-and-play remote monitoring solution.

“Several of our propane industry customers asked for the capability to check tank levels before arriving on-site,” said Brad Walters, Monnit CEO.

“This remote monitor will save energy companies massive amounts of time and fuel by eliminating unnecessary physical checks. More importantly for propane customers, the monitor’s alerts ensure that they will never run dry.”

What IoT brings to the propane industry

The ALTA Propane Tank Monitor enables propane supply companies a needs-based delivery option instead of schedule-based delivery, eliminating unnecessary:

  • Time spent physically checking tanks with sufficient propane levels
  • Fuel used to reach remote tanks which don’t need servicing
  • Wear and tear on service vehicles

Preventing tanks from running dry also means the propane companies don’t need to spend extra time reinitializing a customer’s propane system and saves customers from having to pay hundreds for reinitialization.

Sensor Features

  • Transmits the exact reading from a Sr or Jr R3D Remote Ready gauge
  • Configurable text, email and call alerts
  • Industry-leading range: 1,200+ feet (through 12+ walls)
  • Exceptional battery life delivers 12+ years of monitoring using two AAs
  • Bank-level encryption keeps data safe
  • Global frequencies for international use

Tekelek LoRa tank monitoring technology deployed by Picoty in France

Picoty deploys advanced fuel tank monitoring solution from Tekelek to optimize business operations.

Tekelek, a leading developer and manufacturer of IoT telemetry products and solutions, today announced the launch of a large-scale deployment of LoRa-connected ultrasonic sensors with Picoty in France.

Under the contract, Tekelek will supply Picoty with the recently developed LoRaWAN Tank Sensor which is a flexible and configurable battery-operated liquid sensor with an integrated LoRaWAN radio. It is the first among such SMART tank monitoring devices to be deployed to the European fuel oil distribution market and will enable Picoty to monitor tanks across its group of 27 affiliates in Western France.

The Picoty Group, one of France’s largest fuel distribution companies, provisions fuel, gas, lubricants, ad blue and additives to tens of thousands of tanks in France. The project will use the LoRa network and data platform of Objenious, part of the Bouygues Telecom group.

“We have chosen Tekelek for their deep experience developing accurate and robust tank sensors,” said Mathias Schildt – Growth Development Director and Isabelle Bodecot Chief Product Manager.

“Together with Objenious, which operates the largest LoRa network in France so far, they have put together a compelling solution that allows us to monitor both over-ground and underground tanks throughout France, with excellent quality and battery life.”

“This solution enables us to better organise more efficient deliveries, reduce our carbon footprint, and optimise our logistics. We can offer this solution to a wider range of customers than before due to the cost and battery performance advantages of LoRa, meaning our customers are assured a reliable, efficient and timely fuel delivery service.”

Oliver McCarthy, General Manager says:
“This is an exciting time at Tekelek. We are delighted to engage with Picoty and this deployment in France highlights the opportunity that SMART tank monitoring technology offers. Traditionally, cost of investment has prevented the widespread deployment of tank monitoring units to homes and businesses. Tekelek’s new LoRaWAN Level Monitors infrastructure is based on an ultra-low-power, long-range LoRaWAN network. The advantages of a low-cost network infrastructure, long life battery and low maintenance costs makes large scale monitoring now an affordable and profitable investment for groups such as Picoty.”

Tekelec Smart Tank SensorThe TEK766 LoRaWAN Monitor has the following key features and benefits:

  • Real time data analytics
  • Remote configurability
  • 14-year battery life
  • Flexible liquid level measurement solution i.e. fuel oil, water, chemicals, lubricants, liquid fertiliser etc.
  • Spot and continuous inventory management

“Today, thanks to this SMART solution, which is easy to install and flexible, fuel oil stakeholders’ benefit from numerous advantages, at a lower cost Oliver”, says McCarthy, General Manager at Tekelek.

Orange Business Services Helps Sensile Technologies Remotely Monitor Oil and Gas Tanks Worldwide with M2M Connectivity

Telemetry solution powered by 25,000 SIM cards in 60 countries | Reduces costs of logistics by 25 percent through optimizing deliveries.

Orange Business Services has won a three-year contract with Sensile Technologies for M2M connectivity, including 25,000 SIM cards, to support its two remote monitoring products worldwide: NETRIS®2 and GASLink®.

Headquartered in Morges, Switzerland, Sensile Technologies is a pioneer in the internet of things (IoT) market. Specifically, it is a leading provider of solutions for the remote monitoring of tanks and meters in the oil and gas industry. Sensile Technologies monitors more than 60,000 tanks in industrial and business facilities across 60 countries, via a global network of highly-qualified technicians and local partners.

Up to now, Sensile Technologies used 2G compatible devices to power its telemetry solutions. The contract with Orange Business Services extends this to cover 3G/4G devices, which future-proofs the solutions against 2G network shutdown and ensures seamless global coverage.

Sensile Technologies’ telemetry solutions, GASLink® and NETRIS®2, play a key role in the monitoring process. They are installed directly in the oil or propane tank and regularly send tank level measurements via the GSM network to the cloud, where the data is automatically processed.

The up-to-date tank level data allows oil and propane merchants – and their haulers – to arrange deliveries automatically via planning tools. They get data directly in their enterprise resource planning (ERP) system from Sensile Technologies’ Oil Link cloud solution to trigger deliveries automatically. In addition, their customers can get access on smartphones to monitor consumption.

Thanks to the optimization of deliveries based on live data, merchants and haulers can lower their logistics costs by at least 25 percent, without the risk of customers running dry. In addition to mitigating the risk of running out of fuel, customers are also able to access a detailed visualization and analysis of their logistics, enabling them to adapt their processes to reduce their costs further.

“Leading oil and propane companies rely on our autonomous, robust, and easy to install systems. We have more than 60,000 in place on tanks in over 60 countries. Orange Business Services has proven itself as a reliable partner with the global footprint we need for our business. Their competitive flat-fee pricing was convincing as well,” said Jean-Marc Uehlinger, Operational Director, Sensile Technologies.

Anne-Sophie Lotgering, senior vice president Europe, Russia & CIS, Orange Business Services, says:

“With its telemetry solutions Sensile Technologies is helping drive the latest revolution in industry. In Industry 4.0 every part of the enterprise and each phase of the manufacturing cycle will be connected. The internet of things (IoT) and M2M play a key part in this revolution, and we manage 10 million connected objects for our customers worldwide, including over 7 million active SIM cards.”

GASLink® and NETRIS®2 are the result of 15 years’ experience from Sensile Technologies in the development and production of autonomous telemetry equipment. In addition to using the 2G (SMS) network to transmit data, NETRIS®2 can also use 3G or 4G, as well as create a short-distance radio frequency connection, which functions in every location.
