Semtech’s LoRa® Chip-to-Cloud Platform Enables Sustainable Farming in Malaysia

Semtech’s LoRa devices and gateways utilizing LoRaWAN® help to improve farming practices, lower operational costs and increase crop yields.

Semtech Corporation, a high-performance semiconductor, IoT systems and Cloud connectivity service provider, announces that Sustainable Hrvest Sdn Bhd (SH) has deployed LoRa-enabled sensors and LoRaWAN-based gateways across its Durian fruit farms in greater Malaysia.

While one of the country’s most popular fruits, Durian trees are challenging to grow and harvest. These plants are sensitive to weather and moisture conditions and need 24X7 maintenance for high yield. LoRa-enabled sensors now give Malaysian farmers real-time data on the health of their farms every step of the growth cycle from pre-harvest, harvest, until post-harvest. This real-time visibility has made farmers’ lives easier, while also helping improve their bottom line.

LoRa is the de facto wireless platform of Internet of Things (IoT). Semtech’s LoRa chipsets connect sensors to the Cloud and enable real-time communication of data and analytics. This instantaneous management helps to enhance the efficiency and productivity of sustainable IoT use cases. Globally, there are more than 300 million LoRa end nodes deployed across a wide array of customer applications from agriculture and healthcare to industrial and transportation, and more.

“We founded this company to address the farming barriers and pain points here in Malaysia. To better serve our community, we knew that we needed to improve farming practices, reduce operational costs, and help farmers deliver better yields,” said Han Wei, co-founder, and chief technology officer at SH. “LoRa was an easy choice for our team. One of our biggest farms, Musang Valley Plantation, is more than 700 acres with 11,000 Durian trees. The land includes many steep hillsides which make managing the crops challenging.”

“LoRa monitors the trees, alerts the farmer if there is an issue, and allows them to take immediate action. This response saves not only time, but also mitigates potential tree loss and revenue. Sustainable IoT and LoRa have completely overhauled farming in Malaysia.”

Currently, there are 30 LoRa-powered farms in Malaysia with new plantations expected to go live in the coming 12 months. Designed by Sustainable Hrvest, the IoT nodes utilizing LoRaWAN implement LoRa’s low power, long range sensors and last upwards of four years in the field without needing replacement. This purpose-built chip-to-Cloud sensor platform monitors the flow rate and pressure of irrigation systems to maintain soil moisture levels. It also tracks the nutrients in the soil. The data-driven farming practice gives Malaysian farmers the ability to remotely care for their crops and helps to deliver a more sustainable planet for future generations.

LoRaWAN® Leads the Global Industrial Evolution and Drives Industry 5.0’s Sustainability, Efficiency and Quality of Life Priorities

The LoRa Alliance®, the global association of companies backing the open LoRaWAN® standard for the Internet of Things (IoT) low-power wide-area networks (LPWANs), today showcased how LoRaWAN has become the market leader driving industrial evolution to Industry 5.0 globally.

Industry 5.0 builds on Industry 4.0 by incorporating the human element, guided largely by environmental, social and governance (ESG) initiatives that seek to strengthen sustainability, efficiency and quality of life for the world’s citizens. The LoRa Alliance ecosystem delivers end-to-end solutions across the value chain, which enable holistic digital transformation––encompassing technology, data, new workflows, and operational realignments––needed to achieve industry 5.0’s objectives.

“Over the past few years, the LoRa Alliance has demonstrated how LoRaWAN supports people, planet and profit. These concepts are fundamental to the ideas of Industry 5.0, which aims beyond efficiency and productivity as the sole goals and reinforces the role and the contribution of industry to society with more human-machine collaboration and human-centric solutions,” said Donna Moore, CEO and chairwoman of the LoRa Alliance.

“Globally, businesses are recognizing that achieving business goals takes more than operational improvements, people and technology must work together to bring about change. LoRaWAN has taken a leadership position in this arena with millions of deployments that ultimately focus on increasing sustainability and improving quality of life.”

“The evolution to Industry 5.0 is not possible without the use of open standards, backed by a strong ecosystem that offers choice of vendors and endless innovation. This is also why so many organizations worldwide are adopting the LoRaWAN standard to drive their holistic digitization initiatives.”

Some of the trends driving Industry 5.0 include:

  • The growth of governmental regulations for monitoring to ensure safety, such as New York City’s requirements to monitor for gas leaks. Using LoRaWAN for real-time monitoring has accelerated shut-off times by 6X, according to LoRa Alliance members Senet and ProSentry, saving lives and property.
  • A rapid increase in P&C insurance premiums, reported to be more than 300% since 2017. Water damage claims are the single largest category of losses contributing to rate increases, accounting for $300B in global water claims annually. This is leading insurers to transition to a prevention mindset, encouraging building owners and operators to adopt leak detection technology. LoRa Alliance member Kairos reports that its LoRaWAN flexible leak detection sensors have eliminated water claims for more than 8,000 apartment units since installation and achieved a 6-month ROI on average for asset owners following system installation.
  • The need for residents’ privacy is also driving LoRaWAN adoption in residential buildings, as it allows for facility monitoring and optimization without capturing or transmitting any personally identifiable information.

“Beecham Research is constantly conducting surveys and one-on-one interviews with IoT users and suppliers,” said Robin Duke-Woolley, CEO and Chief Analyst, Beecham Research. “These are consistently showing LoRaWAN as the rapidly rising star for LPWAN sensor deployments in the smart cities, buildings and utility sectors and also gaining ground rapidly in manufacturing, agriculture, and other high-priority sectors. The value that LoRaWAN brings as an open standard makes it inherently agile and encourages innovation across industries.”

“LoRaWAN’s strengths—open standard, strong security, low power, battery-operated, long-distance transmission, low capital and operating expense—make it the leading LPWAN for IoT and the natural choice for Industry 5.0,” added Moore, “Massive LoRaWAN deployments pave the way to meeting ESG goals and adoption of Industry 5.0.”

Recent industry developments and large-scale deployments include:

  • Sigfox owner Unabiz to utilize global LoRaWAN networks via partnerships with LoRa Alliance members Actility, LORIOT, The Things Industries and Senet
  • Nova Labs collaborations with multiple members to integrate Helium Network as a roaming solution and expand global LoRaWAN connectivity for all network operators, including announcements with Actility and Senet

LoRaWAN industry leaders, including:

  • 360,000 smart water meters deployed by Netmore in Yorkshire, UK
  • 23,000 PipeBurst Pro WT500 wireless water sensors deployed in the US by Greenfield Direct

Moore continued: “The value that the world’s largest brands bring to our organization is second to none. I’m proud to include Minol ZENNER Connect and Netmore Group on that list and welcome Zenner USA’s president, Rich Sanders, and Netmore’s CEO, Ove Anebygd to the LoRa Alliance Board of Directors. I look forward to their strategic leadership on the Board of Directors and their companies’ support in driving the alliance and LoRaWAN technology forward.”

“It is an immense opportunity and honor for Zenner to be seated on the board of directors of the LoRa Alliance,” said Rich Sanders, president of Zenner USA. “The open LoRaWAN standard will force industries away from proprietary standards, which make products more expensive and cumbersome to work with for customers who want to automate. Providing an open standard also pushes competition within any industry to be more competitive and customer focused. Across all our businesses, LoRaWAN has been a major part of our ability to provide advanced, low-cost, leading-edge solutions to our customers. As a company, we are committed to the success of the LoRa Alliance and as a board member we are engaged in helping achieve that success.”

“We are honoured and grateful for the opportunity to join the Board of Directors for the LoRa Alliance, an organization that has been instrumental in advancing the adoption of LoRaWAN technology worldwide,” said Anebygd, CEO of Netmore Group. “As a pan-European LoRaWAN operator with a strong commercial momentum, we are convinced that our position and our ambitions harmonize with the vision of the LoRa Alliance. Actility and UnaBiz Integrate LoRaWAN® and Sigfox 0G technology to Unify the LPWAN World

Actility, the leading provider of unlicensed multi-radio LPWAN infrastructure, and UnaBiz, global Massive IoT service provider and integrator have announced a strategic collaboration to integrate their respective platforms and ecosystems.

The joint effort aims to bring the power of LoRaWAN® and Sigfox 0G technology together in a simple and unified manner, enabling customers to meet their diverse networking requirements and accelerate their IoT projects.

Actility, the co-inventor of LoRaWAN® and founding member of LoRa Alliance® serves LoRaWAN and cellular-based public and private LPWAN networks with its ThingPark® platform, and low-power geolocation use cases with its Abeeway trackers. UnaBiz, the new owner of Sigfox 0G technology specialises in sensor product design, manufacturing, and data platform services across a hybrid of network communication technologies to power sustainable business growth. In order to better serve customers that require a range of LPWAN connectivity solutions, UnaBiz and Actility have integrated their platforms at two different levels.

A specific ThingPark X connector is used in the first type of integration to link networks powered by ThingPark to UnaConnect, UnaBiz’s tech-agnostic data management platform. Users of UnaConnect may now access data flows collected from LoRaWAN® and NB-IoT/LTE-M devices that are served by the ThingPark network deployments and global IoT SIMs thanks to this integration.

The second integration brings Sigfox data to LoRaWAN networks and applications via the ThingPark Exchange roaming hub. This helps to translate Sigfox frames to LoRaWAN® frames and vice versa. Any standard LoRaWAN network connected to ThingPark Exchange and IoT applications built for LoRaWAN® can now leverage devices powered by Sigfox 0G technology without any special adaptation.

As both integration methods are independent of one another, customers may choose to use them separately or in combination.

Olivier Hersent, CEO of Actility, said:

“It is a reality that the market uses a mix of LPWAN technologies. UnaBiz and Actility have decided to integrate both our technologies in multiple ways so that any customer may easily utilise either, or a combination of the two, instead of being forced to choose one or do a complex integration on their own. This partnership serves as a resounding affirmation of our shared goal of building Massive IoT.”

“Actility was one of the first LoRaWAN partners to share our vision of Convergence. We are extremely pleased to take another step towards our vision of a United LPWAN World, and excited to see the integration of our technologies happen so swiftly. We will work closely with Actility to help our partners bring new solutions to the market to help our customers accelerate their adoption of multi-technology projects!” said Henri Bong, Co-Founder & CEO of UnaBiz.

Everynet Collaborates with Semtech and ChirpStack on Early Access to Everynet’s National Network in the U.S. from Semtech’s LoRaWAN-Network Server

Known as the Semtech Network Server, developers looking to expand into LoRaWAN® technology will now have immediate, FREE access to the Everynet national LoRaWAN® network, creating an ideal testing to deployment environment.

Everynet1 is pleased to announce a collaboration with Semtech Corporation2 and ChirpStack3 to expand the Semtech developer program to provide direct access to the Everynet National Network from the Semtech Network Server powered by ChirpStack.

Beginning today, developers can visit www.everynet.com/SDN to request early access to the server, which provides developers with a single integrated platform to learn, develop and field test LoRaWAN solutions.

With the Internet of Things affecting every business world-wide, and the proliferation and adoption of LPWAN technologies growing daily, this network server provides an environment where developers can learn, build, and experiment with these new paradigms without investing a lot of time and resources up front. The Semtech Network Server, powered by ChirpStack and Everynet, provides an easy-to-use, FREE environment for developers to test and learn from prototype solutions that they create. Developers can then move developed solutions into production — all on a real network.

These three industry leaders have partnered previously and were natural partners for this offering as well. ChirpStack powers the Semtech Network Server and provides the interfaces for the management of gateways, devices and tenants to setup data integrations with the major cloud providers, databases and services commonly used for handling device data. Everynet operates the largest, neutral-host Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) networks in the world. Their carrier-grade networks offer fully managed, ultra-low-cost Connectivity as a Service, helping to enable the delivery of Massive IoT worldwide. Previously, developers would have to build or buy and manage their own gateways to develop and test prototype solutions. This collaboration has changed all that, providing developers with free access to Everynet network coverage without a gateway.

“Developers are the lifeblood of any technology, and LoRaWAN is no exception,” explains Martyn Stroeve, vice president of outbound product marketing at Semtech. “This is why Semtech has been providing free access to developer tools like the Semtech Network Server. Now, with our partnership, we can provide free network access to developers as well. You can buy off-the-shelf sensors or create your own prototypes, set up a free Semtech Network Server account and get access to the network for free without a gateway in place. We are reducing the barriers for developers to build and test their prototypes and solutions.”

“Everynet is pleased to partner with Semtech and ChirpStack to bring this LoRaWAN development environment to life,” states Gabriel Nave, VP Business Development at Everynet.

“Providing a network where developers can test and immediately take to market LoRaWAN-based solutions is absolutely critical as the adoption rate of LoRaWAN technology surges in the United States and abroad. From our inception, Everynet has been a leader moving LoRaWAN knowledge and adoption forward. This partnership with Semtech and ChirpStack further demonstrates our commitment.”
