Behavioural change startup tackles shipping’s CO2 emissions with IoT ship data

Seafarers on IoT-enabled vessels will be ‘nudged’ to make sustainable operational decisions in new partnership.

Today, behavioural change startup Signol launches a first-of-its kind project with Stolt Tankers to further reduce shipping emissions by using IoT data to help seafarers understand the impact of their actions on overall fuel consumption and CO2 emissions and motivate them to adopt new behaviours.

By combining sensor data with behavioural change techniques, Stolt Tankers is pioneering a human-centered, tech-enabled approach to improving fuel efficiency and reduce shipping’s environmental impact.

The six-month pilot project will run on seven vessels, using Signol’s data-led service to engage seafarers and motivate them to reduce fuel consumption.

Five of the vessels use continuous monitoring (IoT) data through sensors connected directly into the ship’s power management and automation systems, providing a comprehensive and real-time view of what the crew experiences onboard.

Monitoring data will be used to create fair, achievable behavioural goals linked to three actions carried out on the ships: main and auxiliary engine performance and trim optimisation.

By using real-time IoT data as opposed to static snapshots of a ship’s status (e.g. noon reports), Stolt Tankers and Signol can enable crew and shoreside teams to make more proactive and immediate decisions, leading to improved operational efficiency, reduced fuel consumption, and enhanced safety..

IoT data includes a wider range of data points than noon reports and so provides better insights on the factors affecting whether or not crew members can implement emissions-reducing behaviours.

This depth of insights will help seafarers understand the impact of their actions on overall fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, and provide tools that the Stolt Tankers management team can use to encourage and highlight their crew’s sustainability efforts.

Harriet Johnson, Head of Maritime at Signol says:

“Seafarers are frequently making high-consequence decisions with multiple priorities to consider. Their role needs to be recognised, and the complexities involved in each of these decisions must not only be respected but also aided in a sustainable and positive manner.”

Stolt Tankers’ partnership with Signol supports its continuous improvement programme and sustainability ambition to become a carbon-neutral business by 2050.

Maren Schroeder, Managing Director of Stolt Tankers, says: “For every goal achieved through the system we commit to planting three mangrove saplings at the Stolt Tankers Mangrove Forest in the JBLFMU Ecological Park, the Philippines. Wiliot Makes its Debut at COP27, as the Ambient IoT and the Future of Supply Chain Sustainability are Featured at the Leading UN Climate Conference

Wiliot, the Internet of Things pioneer whose IoT platform is enabling trillions of “things” to gain intelligence, today announced that it has been selected to attend COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt from November 6-18.

At the event, Wiliot will be showcasing its pioneering ambient computing technology – the Wiliot IoT Pixel and Cloud platform – and educating global leaders on the ways in which it’s enabling an ambient IoT poised to create more sustainable, cost-efficient supply chains.

Wiliot’s vision for the future of the Ambient IoT brings intelligence and internet connectivity to every single ‘thing’ in the global supply chain, enabling products to transmit item-level information about their location, temperature, carbon footprint, and more. With this information, businesses are – for the first time – equipped with the real-time data they need to make more sustainably-minded decisions that reduce their carbon footprint.

Furthermore, the real-time delivery of this carbon data offers an effective alternative to today’s annual reporting cadence, which is proving insufficient for businesses looking to make a material impact on their carbon footprint.

Wiliot is attending COP27 as part of an Israeli delegation that includes nine other climate-tech innovators that were selected at PLANETech World, Israel’s first-ever clean-tech conference that recently took place in Tel Aviv.

Wiliot IoT Pixels are stamp-sized computers that cost pennies and feature a fundamental breakthrough in ambient computing technology – or computing that’s self-powered, harvesting radio waves that are all around us. These battery-free IoT Pixels can attach to any product or packaging to connect it to the internet; not just expensive things like cars, appliances, and shipping containers, but the things inside them: fruits, veggies, vaccine vials, clothes, crates, and just about everything else.

The benefits of this technology are vast. Produce stays fresher longer, reducing the amount wasted due to rot and spoil; delivery routes are more efficient, requiring less fuel and emitting lower greenhouse gas; stock-checks transition from daily to real-time, resulting in supply chains with lower carbon footprints; and so much more.

Furthermore, the Wiliot platform is equipping employees across organizations with this real-time data empowers them to take action every day, which is proving to have a profound impact on corporate sustainability and profitability.

In a recent project with a large retailer, the temperature of a pallet of berries rose precipitously when it was mistakenly left out on a store floor, threatening the fruit’s freshness. However, rather than spoil, the temperature rise was flagged and an alert was sent to store employees, who addressed the situation in the moment.

Ambient IoT support is being added to the wireless standards that enable the world’s phones, smart speakers, and access points. Industry analyst ABI Research predicted a total addressable market for ambient IoT of over 10 trillion devices at the recent GSMA MWC event in a presentation it co-delivered with Wiliot and Deloitte.

Electric aircraft and eVTOLs will pave the way for a greener future and increased mobility

Berg Insight, the world’s leading IoT market research provider, today released new findings about the market for electric aircraft and eVTOLs (passenger vehicles that take off and land vertically).

There are today many large-scale industrial projects in development with the purpose of developing aircraft and eVTOLs based on electric drivetrains. At the same time, the electrification of the aviation industry represents a challenge as the industry is heavily regulated and has a strong commitment to safe operations and redundant systems.

“The market for electric aircraft and eVTOLs will for many years probably be more about high value rather than high volume. The large number of uncertainties going forward open up a lot of possible scenarios in the longer term”, says Henrik Littorin, author of the report.

The flight range is anticipated to be limited in the first decades but due to fast, efficient, sustainable and silent operations they will be able to create new connectivity within large urban areas, between cities, from rural regions to cities and between rural areas.

There are hundreds of eVTOL concepts being developed around the world, both for commercial and private use. Many of them are large vehicles with wingspans of up to 15 metres, something that needs to be considered when developing ground infrastructure as well as working with city planning, passenger processing and safety issues. Examples of eVTOL vendors include Archer, Beta Technologies, Ehang, Eve Air Mobility, Joby Aviation, Lilium, Volocopter, Vertical Aerospace and Wisk.

There are also a number of companies working on electric aircraft and drivetrains, a market where both established aviation companies and start-ups are active. These companies that have completely different backgrounds, address the challenge in different ways, which will result in several possible solutions and design pathways. Examples of electric aircraft developers include Heart Aerospace, Pipistrel, Eviation and Bye Aerospace.

Before 2030, the first piloted eVTOLs will most likely be in commercial operation. Between 2031–2035 the ecosystem and acceptance will develop further and an anticipated 20,000 vehicles will be taken into operation worldwide during the period. From 2036 until 2050 we forecast almost 60,000 deliveries in our mid scenario.

“In our most positive scenario we have come to the conclusion that deliveries could reach up to 150,000 vehicles between 2025–2050. This scenario is based on a favourable regulatory environment where the long-term airspace management has been solved as well as the approval of autonomous flights”, says Mr. Littorin.

There is also a market for private eVTOLs. When assuming favourable conditions, shipments will reach up to 300,000 vehicles during 2025–2050. Most of these will be small two-seaters and the majority of them will be delivered in the later part of the forecast period. These vehicles will all need advanced avionics, connectivity, and avoid and detect technology but at the same time need to be cost-efficient solutions. A tricky combination since the regulatory demands will be very strict.

It will take some years before the first certified commercial aircraft is ready for production. The forecast is based on an aircraft size of 6–19 seats for battery powered aircraft and 19–90 seats for hydrogen (fuel-cell) powered aircraft. This excludes the smallest aircraft types that will probably be used by for example flight schools. Due to the complex certification pathway and the dependence of new ground and charging infrastructure, only a few hundred aircraft are forecasted to be delivered before 2030. In the five-year period between 2031–2035, around 1,000 aircraft are anticipated to be delivered in the mid scenario. Some of the addressable market for electric aircraft is based on the replacement of the current fleet of small aircraft. It will take time to develop production capacity and solve ground infrastructure challenges but with more efficient drivetrains the use case and economics look favourable in the longer term.

Mr. Littorin, says: “We estimate in our mid and high scenarios deliveries of 18,000–25,000 electric aircraft between 2036–2050.”

Electric aircraft and eVTOLs (for commercial and private use) will need to be equipped with advanced connectivity technologies. Cellular connectivity is one of the prominent technologies available to support the use cases in urban areas. The upcoming LDACS (L-band Digital Aeronautical Communications System) standard is a secure, scalable and spectrum efficient terrestrial data link for civil aviation and a cellular broadband system with support for IPv6 standard. Satellite systems can also complement the ground-based architectures, particularly the LEO (Low Earth Orbit) satellite constellations.

Mr. Littorin concludes:

“The number of connected vehicles will take off from 2030 and then increase steadily. We estimate almost 75,000 connected vehicles for passenger use already 2035 and between 350,000–450,000 in 2050. Many of these are smaller and privately owned eVTOLs.”

New solutions to help empower businesses to drive progress against sustainability goals.

NTT Ltd., a global technology and business solutions provider, today announced the launch of its IoT Services for Sustainability offering.

The new end-to-end stack of solutions will help businesses advance progress against global sustainability initiatives and make data-driven decisions to reduce their carbon footprint through the intelligent use of IoT connectivity.

  • OCR Meter Reading: An optical-based meter reader to provide near real-time data from any type of meter including water, electricity, and gas. The meter can also be used to read any type of gauge including pressure and temperature.
