Short-Range Wireless Connectivity to Thrive in Emerging IoT Applications

Mobile Broadband Modems for Computing Applications Top US$4B in 2014 Revenues, Finds ABI Research

The market for mobile broadband modems used in non-smartphone mobile computers, tablets, and CE devices is at a tipping point. According to market intelligence firm ABI Research, more than 53 million modems and mobile hotspot routers shipped in 2014, valued at US$4.1 billion in end-user revenues.

Despite the growth in local high-speed LTE mobile network access, fewer PC owners are buying aftermarket USB modems and deciding to stick with Wi-Fi connectivity. Also, global audiences are holding off Notebook PC upgrades and replacements for budgetary reasons as well as considering what type of solution is needed going forward.

Sr. Practice Director Jeff Orr, says:

“The vendor landscape changed significantly in 2014 with several suppliers exiting the computing modem business, changing strategic focus to exclusively M2M / IoT, or being acquired.”

Modem stalwart Huawei continued its leadership by supplying approximately 62% of the world’s modem unit volume in 2014, up about 1% from 2013. ZTE remained in second with 26% unit share. More than 53% of worldwide shipments supported up to the HSPA+ air interface protocol, while nearly 11% included support for the 4G LTE protocol.

In 2015, ABI Research predicts 16% modem revenue growth on the backs of embedded modem module adoption in ultraportable computers and tablets.

“OEMs are seeing greater demand for mobile broadband in tablets as well as ultraportable PCs. The plan could be foiled, however, if pricey mobile broadband service contracts deter potential buyers,” adds Orr.
Similarly, if a greater percentage of tablet makers switch from using a self-contained modem module to design-in chipsets as happened with Apple’s iPad family, future module business will be jeopardized.

Telit to Expand its Mobile Computing Offerings – Leveraging Collaboration with Intel®

New M.2 (NGFF) LTE and HSPA+ Data Cards Delivering up to 100Mpbs Speeds for Commercial and Consumer Applications.

Telit Wireless Solutions, a leading global vendor of high-quality machine-to-machine (M2M) modules and value-added services, today announced the introduction of a family of new data cards in the new M.2, Next Generation Form Factor (NGFF). The data cards augment the company’s mobile computing product line currently comprised of mPCIe modules in HSPA+ and 1xEvDO cellular technologies. The new data cards are to be based on Intel’s designs for LTE/DC-HSPA+ and HSPA+. They target not only new always-connected consumer and leading edge adopter applications such as Ultrabook™, laptops, tablets, but also commercial and industrial devices, as the current favored mPCIe form factor gets gradually replaced by M.2.

Telit has since 2002, applied Intel chipsets in many of its M2M modules but starting September 2012 the two companies agreed to design and market data card products, to keep pace with growing global demand for mobile broadband solutions. Telit’s new M.2 lineup will include LN930 and HN930 product families conceived to address both global, regional, and speed requirements from cutting edge LTE/DC-HSPA+ and HSPA+ applications in mobile computing and gadgets. The Intel based LTE products are set to deliver speeds up to 100 Mbps down and 50 Mbps up; Dual Carrier HSPA+ 42 Mbps down and 11.5 Mbps up; and HSPA+ 21 Mbps down and 5.76 Mbps up.

The sub-compact and ultra slim 30x42mm M.2 data cards include global satellite (and assisted) positioning technology and certified drivers for Windows™7 & 8. They also feature the industry’s new Firmware Switching standard enabling the host Operating System and drivers to switch the card’s firmware to the latest and specific cellular network approved revision, thus overcoming a longstanding complexity hurdle in provisioning cellular connectivity devices in non-operator branded consumer products. The switching is triggered by the simple insertion of the consumer or operator supplied SIM card into the PC’s SIM card slot.

The new data cards interface to the host computer or gadget through a USB 3.0 connection supporting selective suspend (SS) and link power management (LPM). The SS feature allows the device driver to turn off (standby) the data card when it goes idle. When the card is again active or required, the system wakes it and resumes normal operation. Both SS and LPM are critical for latest generation battery powered consumer devices such as the Ultrabook™, conceived to ensure the user can reap several hours of use before a battery recharge is needed. The data cards employ these and other power-saving standards and policies to enhance the user experience of the host device.

Telit’s industrialization plans call for start of samples program in Q2 and commercial availability in Q3 2013. To accelerate time to market for the PC OEMS, Intel has validated M.2 cards for use with the Intel Tablet and Ultrabook™ reference designs.

Intel is pleased to be working with Telit to bring to market highly competitive modules offering worldwide coverage, high performance, and an optimized user experience,” said Horst Pratsch, head of Product Line Modules & M2M at Intel Corporation.

“Telit 3G and 4G M.2 modules take advantage of Intel’s experience in ramping cellular technology globally in industry leading smartphone devices, along with integration, validation, and optimization in Intel computing platforms.”

Until recently, a large cellular infrastructure equipment vendor held a 50% market share in the data card market used in mobile computing, primarily with the mPCIe format. However, this supplier has exited the market representing a potentially disruptive development in the supply chain,” said Oozi Cats, Telit CEO.
Telit is perfectly positioned to step in to fill the gap given the high confidence level we enjoy with our customers, particularly OEMs with respect to long-term, high-volume supply as well as our strong global and local support structure.

Ten years on, leveraging the industry’s broadest portfolio of hardware in cellular, short range and positioning technologies, artfully complemented by services and connectivity from m2mAIR, Telit is M2M’s One Stop Shop. By applying products and services in synergizing bundles, delivered with global support and logistics matching each individual need or want, Telit eliminates technical risk shortening time to market to the Internet of Things, wherever YOU come from – industry or segment.

“Today marks a new high-speed chapter in Australian mobile telecommunications. Telstra’s 4G network delivers mobile speeds scarcely imagined a decade ago, making it easier for people to connect with the things they need and love when on the move.”

The superfast speeds mean consumers can download songs faster, get TV shows in minutes and do more things simultaneously. This is just the beginning. Telstra 4G will allow our mobile devices to perform even more advanced tasks and open the door to a host of innovative high-speed services that have yet to be conceived.

Telstra 4G is available in the central business districts of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Hobart, Darwin and Canberra. 4G is also available from launch in more than 30 metropolitan and regional centres. Using the Telstra USB 4G mobile broadband modem, customers in 4G coverage areas can enjoy typical download speeds ranging from 2Mbps to 40Mbps* – up to ten times faster than 3G speeds currently claimed by other Australian telecommunications companies. Customers can also experience typical upload speeds of 1Mbps to 10Mbps – three times faster than previous generations of mobile broadband in Australia. These are some of the fastest mobile download and upload speeds available anywhere.

As well as supporting faster mobile speeds, Telstra 4G provides a more responsive internet connection. Network latency (the time it takes for data to travel from a PC to the internet and back) is around half that experienced on current 3G networks meaning real-time applications like video conferencing, internet gaming and cloud-hosted streaming services work better with less buffering and fewer interruptions.

The new Telstra USB 4G and the Telstra 4G network provide Australians with the most advanced wireless technology currently available anywhere in the world,” said Jason Cohenour, CEO for Sierra Wireless. “We are very pleased to continue our longstanding collaboration with Telstra to launch the new Telstra USB 4G in Australia.

The Telstra USB 4G features a thin, matchbook-style design that optimizes the dual-antenna placement for best performance, while including user-friendly details like an articulating and pivoting hinge that works with the widest possible array of laptop USB ports. Sierra Wireless also offers an external antenna for the device, which can improve reception in areas with lower signal strength.

Setup for the Telstra USB 4G is simple, with built-in support for both Microsoft Windows and Mac OS operating systems. Supporting software automatically installs directly from the device, meaning users can be up and running within minutes.

The BigPond USB 4G can be purchased by consumer customers for $0 (after rebate) on a range of new 24 month plans – including on a $49.95 per month plan with 4GB of data included each month over 24 months (min cost $1,198.80).

The Telstra USB 4G can be purchased by business customers on a range of plans including for $0 upfront on the $39 Telstra Mobile Broadband Standard Plan over 24 months (minimum total cost $936) with 4GB included data.

Offering download speeds up to 75 Megabits per second today and as fast as 100 Megabits per second in the future, the 4G LTE Sierra Wireless U313 provides Bell Mobility customers an uncompromising on-the-go mobile Internet connection for video streaming, online gaming and other bandwidth-heavy tasks.

Sierra Wireless and Bell today announced that the 4G LTE Sierra Wireless U313 Turbo Stick (also known as the Sierra Wireless AirCard® 313U) is now available from Bell.

Providing laptop users with mobile Internet access to Bell’s new 4G LTE network with speeds rivaling wired broadband, the 4G LTE Sierra Wireless U313 supports online work or play, including video streaming and online gaming, from anywhere within network coverage.

Dan Schieler, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Mobile Computing for Sierra Wireless, said:

“With 4G LTE, we can truly deliver a rich multimedia experience on the laptop that stands up to comparison with what people expect from their home or office connections.”

We are thrilled to be collaborating with Bell on its 4G LTE network launch and to deliver the 4G LTE Sierra Wireless U313 Turbo Stick to Bell Mobility customers.

The 4G LTE Sierra Wireless U313 offers Bell Mobility customers mobile Internet download speeds as fast as 75 Megabits per second (Mbps) with typical speeds ranging between 12 and 25 Mbps and up to 100 Mbps as the network platform evolves. The 4G LTE Sierra Wireless U313 also switches seamlessly to the best available network technology when customers are out of an LTE coverage area.

Bell announced yesterday that it was the first wireless carrier to bring 4G LTE coverage to Toronto – Canada’s largest wireless market – and nearby areas including Mississauga, Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo and Guelph.

Being first to offer 4G LTE – the most cutting-edge innovation in next generation network technology – to Canada’s largest wireless market demonstrates Bell’s commitment to industry leadership,” said Adel Bazerghi, Senior Vice President of Products at Bell Mobility.

Capable of delivering top speeds of 75 Mbps today, 100 Mbps in the future and fallback speeds as fast 42 Mbps, the 4G LTE Sierra Wireless U313 Turbo Stick is a great device to introduce Bell Mobility customers to all that 4G LTE from Bell has to offer.

Bell’s 4G LTE network is the first and only Canadian 4G network to switch to the next fastest speed available when outside LTE areas – either Bell’s Dual Carrier HSPA+ providing peak speeds up to 42 Mbps (typical between 7 and 14 Mbps) available to approximately 70% of the Canadian population or HSPA+ offering speeds up to 21 Mbps (typical between 3.5 and 8 Mbps) to more than 96% of Canadians.

The 4G LTE Sierra Wireless U313 features a thin, matchbook-style design that optimizes the dual-antenna placement for best performance, while including user-friendly details like an articulating and pivoting hinge that works with the widest possible array of laptop USB ports. Setup is simple, with built-in support for both Microsoft Windows and Mac OS operating systems. Supporting software automatically installs directly from the device, meaning customers can be up and running within minutes.

The 4G LTE Sierra Wireless U313 Turbo Stick can be purchased online today starting at $79.95 on a three year term ($219.95 with no term contract) and will be available in Bell stores tomorrow.

Cavli Wireless Brings the Next-generation CAT1.bis Module C16QS

New Sierra Wireless AirPrime MC8305 and MC8355 embedded modules integrated into Fujitsu LIFEBOOK notebook and tablet computers for true portability and productivity.

Sierra Wireless today announced that Fujitsu has selected Sierra Wireless to provide 3G mobile broadband for several new models in its LIFEBOOK series of notebooks and tablets. Fujitsu LIFEBOOK customers with integrated Sierra Wireless embedded modules can access the Internet from wherever they are to connect with colleagues and clients, by simply subscribing to a wireless data service plan. With embedded mobile broadband capability, they no longer need to spend valuable time searching for and accessing WiFi hotspots.

The Fujitsu LIFEBOOK platforms utilize the new Sierra Wireless AirPrime MC8305 and MC8355 embedded wireless modules. The AirPrime™ MC8305 and the AirPrime MC8355 are based on the Gobi3000™ reference design by Qualcomm. The AirPrime MC8305 is a single-mode HSPA module, and the AirPrime MC8355 is a dual-mode version, offering support for both HSPA and CDMA networks. Both modules offer download speeds of up to 14.4 Mbps and uploads of up to 5.76 Mbps. Ideal for integration into laptops or tablets, both modules allow device manufacturers to take advantage of high speed mobile networks, embedded GPS capabilities and a Gobi application programming interface (API).

In addition to the modules, Sierra Wireless provided professional services to Fujitsu, including integration, testing and certification support. Fujitsu LIFEBOOK models with the integrated AirPrime modules also come with Sierra Wireless Watcher™ software pre-installed, providing an intuitive user interface to manage the wireless connection and leverage features like the GPS connection for location-based information.

We have been collaborating with Sierra Wireless for several years now, and we have built the industry’s broadest portfolio of mobile computers with integrated 3G connectivity,” said Dieter Heiss, Senior Director Workplace Systems at Fujitsu Technology Solutions.

Integrated mobile broadband offers a lot of value to our customers by simplifying their daily lives and freeing valuable time from their busy schedules. Working with Sierra Wireless offers us similar value, by simplifying the wireless integration process for each new generation of products and helping us meet our launch schedules.

Fujitsu’s commitment to providing integrated mobile broadband in such a wide variety of devices is indicative of how necessary and useful we all find our online connections,” said Dan Schieler, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Mobile Computing for Sierra Wireless.
